Tom Brady took the chance to make fun of the Boston Red Sox on Friday night amid Boston’s historic blowout loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, in which it allowed a total of 28 runs to be scored against them.
The Red Sox and the Blue Jays game on Friday night resembled a football game in terms of the lopsided score. It brought back memories of one of the greatest New England Patriots games ever played for Brady.
The Red Sox were behind 25-3 in the fifth inning of their historic loss to the Blue Jays. At that time, the internet was flooded with comparisons to New England’s memorable 28-3 comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI.
Brady’s career has been filled with major highlights. Still, his comeback Super Bowl victory over the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 went down in history as the one he will be best remembered for by football fans.
Brady, former New England Patriots quarterback, couldn’t resist making a joke about the familiar score.
“Gonna be a hell of a story!” he tweeted.
In the end, the Red Sox could not spark a comeback of their own, as they set a franchise record for the most runs allowed in the franchise’s 122-year history and never came close to winning. Christian Vázquez and Rob Refsnyder homered to cut the Blue Jays’ lead to 27-5, but the Blue Jays added one more to the number (28-5) and cruised to victory.
Rafael Devers enters injured list
After suffering a devastating defeat against the Blue Jays on Friday night, the Red Sox were ready to put the past behind them and focus on the future, as they still could win their first American League East series of the season.
The following day, however, the worst possible setback for the team came as Rafael Devers, the Red Sox third baseman, was placed on the 10-day injured list with right hamstring inflammation before Saturday’s loss against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
Bobby Dalbec’s first-inning solo home run against Toronto starter Alek Manoah, who had crushed the Red Sox all season, was the only run the Red Sox got without him. Boston now has a record of 0-11-1 against teams within its division.
The Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, “We just got to keep playing hard. I wouldn’t say it’s going to get easier. We’re banged up; we know that. … Nobody’s going to feel sorry for us.
“This is where we’re at.”
After his fifth-inning at-bat on Friday, Devers complained of a hamstring problem. During his first at-bat of the game, a double, he seemed a little sluggish as he approached the plate. During his final at-bat, Devers gripped his hamstring, and his manager decided to check on him.
In the sixth inning, Devers was replaced by Dalbec. As a result of the tests he received ahead of Saturday’s game, the Red Sox have opted to “be proactive” and place the 25-year-old on the IL.
Devers became Boston’s 12th player to be placed on the injured list this month, just one day after lefty Chris Sale became the 11th. Lefty Rich Hill, righty Michael Wacha, infielder Christian Arroyo, and second baseman Trevor Story are among those named. Only catcher Kevin Plawecki has returned since being placed on the injured list.
