Woods will be absent from US Open
Regarding the US Open match scheduled for June 16 to 19 in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, the 46-year-old golfer said he would be absent from the game. He conveyed this directly through an upload on his Twitter account.
In a post on Twitter, Woods said “I have previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing at @usopengolf. This is because my body needs more time to get stronger for major golf championships.”
Woods also said that he plans to prepare to play in Ireland which will be held from 4 to 5 July and The Open in Old Course in St. Andrews on July 14 to 17. In addition, Woods, a three-time US Open winner, said he puts the British Open first.
On Twitter, the USGA responded to Woods’ tweet saying “You will be missed. We look forward to seeing you back at the #USOpen again soon!”
Woods’ tournaments after injury and the US Open field
Since suffering a serious injury in a car crash in February 2021, the Woods has only played in two events. In these two matches, Woods was still unable to play with his maximum performance because he was still in the post-accident health recovery program.
After suffering an injury, in April the 15-time premier golf champion returned to the Master’s course in Augusta, Georgia for the first time. According to a report, the tournament marks the return of the competitive golfer after more than 500 days of absence from the course.
The tournament was rated as his worst Masters performance as a professional golfer. Woods ended the tournament on the 18th hole with a 13-over 301 and 8 strokes.
In addition, he also withdrew from the PGA Championship in Southern Hills last month after scoring 79 points in the third round. Woods withdrew after limping in the cold and wind to make 5 bogeys straight. It was Woods’ first-ever retirement as a professional due to his right leg which continued to hurt after every lap.
The terrain of the Country Club, which is not hilly, is a tough challenge for Woods because it will be physically exhausting for 4 days. This is because Woods had to go through the rough terrain of the US Open which was notoriously difficult and challenging for the players to face.
Since 2010, Woods has not reached the top 5 at the US Open. He has also failed three times in his last four matches.
