The San Francisco 49ers currently have no apparent trade deal in sight for veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, reported on Sunday for NFL Network.
If the 49ers are unable to find a suitable trade partner until August 30 at 1 p.m, they can keep him at no cost to the organization. If San Francisco keeps Garoppolo past that date, his $24.1 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed.
“The 49ers have been very clear about saying that they plan to trade him,” Rapoport reported.
“Obviously, not going to be with the team this coming season. My understanding, though, right now is there is no clear trade partner for Jimmy Garoppolo. Look around the NFL, think of who could take on that salary, think of who needs a starting quarterback.”

The 49ers have made the best decision for their team by keeping Garoppolo as long as possible. They are holding out in case another team develops a need for a quarterback and wishes to compensate San Francisco for acquiring the veteran player.
However, doing so could have a negative impact on Garoppolo in 2022. The longer he stays on the 49ers’ roster, the more difficult it will be for him to find a team in time to play in Week 1.
Garoppolo has been San Francisco’s starting quarterback since October 2017. The Niners acquired him from the New England Patriots. They’ve advanced to the NFC Championship Game in two of the last three seasons under Garoppolo, and they won the Super Bowl in 2019. The 30-year-old also has two Super Bowl rings from his time as Tom Brady’s backup with the Patriots.
The veteran signal-caller had 3,810 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a 98.7 quarterback rating while completing 68.3 percent of his passes last season.
Garroppolo, who underwent shoulder surgery in March, resumed throwing without restrictions last week. For the time being, he is not practicing with the team and is only participating in throwing drills.
The 49ers’ NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, have been linked to Garoppolo. According to NFL insider Randy Mueller, if the 49ers release Garoppolo, Seattle will be his first choice.
“The one starting job that seems to be open is in Seattle, and I know early in camp Drew Lock has not gotten many of the [first-team] reps, it’s been Geno Smith,” Mueller said on August 3. “That tells me that that job is wide open. So, I would think if I were Pete Carroll, or if I were John Schneider, I would be like you said, first, second [and] third in line if Jimmy G does get released.”
49ers’ new quarterback
Trey Lance was named the 49ers’ starting quarterback for the upcoming season during the offseason. Lance, a North Dakota State player, was selected by the 49ers with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
However, the new QB, Lance had his worst practice session of the season a day after ending practice on a high note with a last-second touchdown pass. Lance began Sunday’s practice by completing three consecutive passes, but he only connected on one of 11 throws after that.
He threw a terrible interception to linebacker Fred Warner and was only saved from a pick by a drop by 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward.
Lance’s Sunday session continued to be a disappointment. During the early scripted portion of 11-on-11 practice, he missed five consecutive throws, the majority of which sailed high. Lance’s accuracy on short-to-intermediate routes deteriorated as practice progressed.
While Lance reportedly had a rough practice, a fan video showed Garoppolo looking good as he recovered from shoulder surgery.
