The San Francisco Giants defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-3 on Saturday, ending the Giants’ losing streak in the past four games. It also marked their fourth win in the second half of the season.
LaMonte Wade Jr. l, who delivered a home run in the game, gave a comment about the team’s victory.
“It felt good to do something today. A good team win,” Wade said. “We’re starting to click a little bit on both sides of the ball. Anytime at full health I think we’re pretty good.”
Throughout the 2022 season, the Giants had to perform without some of their key players. However, they have shuffled the roster as outfielder Joc Pederson and shortstop Brandon Crawford were on the field again to face the Oakland team.
Gabe Kapler, the Giants’ manager, said that the chance to score runs went up as their lineup was “kind of deep and healthier”.
“These are the guys that we’re going to need to perform if we’re going to the postseason,” Kapler remarked. “And it’s going to need to be a lot of consistent and especially good performance. That’s what we saw today.”
Game overview
This game was the opening of a two-game series between the two rivals. The Athletics host the series at their home base, Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, CA.
Carlos Rodón was the starting pitcher for the Giants in this game. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed only one run.
In the second innings, Wade made his fourth home run in 2022 off Athletics pitcher Adam Oller, following a leadoff single from teammate Joey Bart.
J.D. Davis made a pinch-hit shot in the next inning off Athletics’ Kirby Snead and got a homerun. For Davis, it was his second home run after moving from the New York Mets earlier this week.
In the seventh inning, Bart also followed his teammates’ steps and stole a home run from Snead.
The home team offered a retaliation in the form of a home run by Skye Bolt. Sean Murphy stole two runs and an RBI from Rodón after that.
Rodón praised the opponent for “sticking to their plan” and got him out of the game earlier than the pitcher would have liked.
“I thought they put together some very good at-bats,” Rodón told the reporter.
Seven runs are the second highest runs earned by the Giants after a 9-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at the end of the first half.
At the start of the second half of this season, the Giants lost seven games in a row to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Before meeting the Oakland team, the Giants were swept in a four-game series against the Dodgers.
Recent trade news
Like other teams in the league, the Giants’ trade was also discussed by analysts. Before last week’s trade deadline, analysts reported that Rodón’s name was on the table for trade as he would be a free agent in the offseason.
However, the Giants’ management decided to maintain the pitcher on their roster which might be a good decision as he contributed to the team’s win in the recent game.
The Giants traded away Darin Ruff to the Mets in exchange for Davis, Thomas Szapucki, and two prospects. The San Francisco baseball team also traded away Curt Casali and Matthew Boyd to acquire two minor league prospects.
