Green Bay Packers receiver Sammy Watkins has said Aaron Rodgers is “on a whole ‘nother level” compared to Patrick Mahomes.
Although Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Mahomes has received a lot of praise for his performance on the field, some people still regard Rodgers as the superior player. Rodgers has had a very long and successful career in the NFL, while Mahomes is relatively new in comparison.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill also took shots at Mahomes back in June, saying that Tua Tagovailoa had better accuracy in throwing than Mahomes.
Recently, Watkins recently said in an interview that while he believed Mahomes was a very good player, he said Rodgers was a step above.
“I think Pat is incredibly good, but A-Rod is on a whole ‘nother level. He’s amazing. How he controls the ball. How he puts everyone in place,” said Watkins.
“I’ve been with a lot of quarterbacks, and I’ve never seen them carry themselves like Aaron Rodgers.”

Rodgers vs. Mahomes
Watkins highlighted Rodgers’ unique style of play. This is not the first time the two being compared and it won’t be the last. Both quarterbacks have been in the running for MVP since 2020. Some of the largest differences between the two players are age and experience. Rodgers is over a decade older than Mahomes, with a long career of consistent performance to match, earning the NFL MVP award four times.
Nevertheless, Mahomes managed to lead the Chiefs to become the Super Bowl champions in 2019 after defeating the San Francisco 49ers. This achievement earned him the Super Bowl MVP title that year, making him the youngest quarterback to earn the award. The 2020 season saw his team make it to the Super Bowl again but had his run cut short by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mahomes also managed to become recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL in less than half a decade of play.
The 2021 NFL season was a time when their rivalry became particularly hot due to the debate over which quarterback should be named MVP. Fans of Rodgers argued that he performed excellently while his teammates on the roster presented a sub-par display.
“… how many other quarterbacks could do what Rodgers did with Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling as their Nos. 2 and 3 receivers?”, wrote ESPN.
On the other hand, Mahomes has repeatedly recorded impressive stats, on which the Chiefs can rely. There were three instances in the season where the Chiefs just needed a score to either win the game or send it to overtime, and Mahomes delivered just that all three times.
“There is no case against Mahomes that is airtight. He did get sloppy at times, particularly in a Week 14 game against the Dolphins… He still wound up throwing for 393 yards and two touchdowns,” wrote ESPN.
Rodgers ended up winning MVP that year, and now the two will inevitably invite more comparison as the 2022 season begins.
The Packers and the Chiefs are slated to play a game on August 24 at GEHA Field in Kansas City, MO.
