Having a close call, it was the second game of a three-game series between the Brewers and Blue Jays. The score is now even 1-1 as the next game will still be played at Brewers’ home ground.
Burnes, McCutchen, Brosseau make play
Burnes pitched into the eighth inning, McCutchen and Mike Brosseau homered, resulting in the Milwaukee Brewers slamming Toronto Blue Jays.
It was Burnes who started at the mound and turned the losing streak as the Brewers defeated the Blue Jays. Burns allowed home runs to Matt Chapman and Bo Bichette for his very first start versus the Blue Jays. Burnes (6-4) recorded nine strikeouts and walked two in the match.
Looking at how Burnes played, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said the pitcher was great at throwing versus Toronto, especially in the middle inning.
“He’s picked up right where he left off last year,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “In the middle innings, I thought he really got cooking.”
However, the pitcher said that his two throws were bad and made the Blue Jays score.
“Those two lazy pitches that were hit out for homers, other than that, it was pretty good,” Burnes said.
Burnes also said he wants to improve his throw, especially the cutter ball.
At the hitting lineup, Brosseau and McCutchen faced Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi (2-4). The two outfielders run a homer each.
McCutchen hit his sixth home run of the season, while Kikuchi allowed five runs, two earned, unfortunately, he slipped to 1-3 in his last seven starts.
Charlie Montoyo tells his boys to improve
Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said that Kikuchi must improve for the next match.
“Again, I’m not going to sit here and make excuses for him. He hasn’t pitched well. He put us in a tough spot today,” he said.
Kikuchi said that he was trying to get the play by throwing the ball, but he just couldn’t.
“I’ve struggled the last few outings mostly with command, falling behind in the count and then pitches where I try to get back into the count are the ones that are getting hit pretty hard,” he said through an interpreter.
It was Alejandro Kirk’s comeback in the lineup for Toronto after the last win. The DH got his hand clipped by the backswing from Jonathan Davis after the seventh, and he was replaced by Gabriel Moreno afterward.
After the lead 5-0 by the Brewers, Toronto shut down their offense for the remaining inning. It was Max Castillo who pitched a scoreless ball in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth.
Yet, it couldn’t help the Blue Jays to come back and win the match as the Brewers were still in the lead by the end of the ninth inning.
