The San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said that their quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is still welcomed in the team. The rumors of Garoppolo being out for trade are rising up after he only spent time in training throwing passes but not practicing with the rest of the team.
Shanahan tried to calm down the rumors, saying that Garoppolo’s presence is still needed by the 49ers.
“If Jimmy wanted to be in every meeting and every single thing, we’d let him,” Shanahan explained, per Cam Inman of East Bay Times.
“When we asked that was accurate, he didn’t totally want that. He’s getting his body ready for hopefully the next situation he goes into.”
The New York Giants were reportedly eyeing Garoppolo to fill their quarterback spot. However, according to ESPN’s Jordan Ranaan, the Giants are not into it.
“I’ve spoken to people within the organization, the Giants are not getting Jimmy Garoppolo,” Raanan said.
“Tell me how that makes sense for the New York Giants? Are they trying to win this year? Is he their future franchise quarterback? Do they have the money? Why would they give up assets? This is a rebuilding team. So, you put all that together and I don’t see how it’s even realistic,” he explained.

Garoppolo’s future in the 49ers still sparks a lot of questions. Last month, he made it to the team after passing his physical issue and being cleared off the injury list.
He previously had surgery for his injured shoulder in the 49er’s wild-card win over the Dallas Cowboys in January. The surgery postponed the team’s plan to trade him this offseason.
“I expect at some time, most likely, he’ll be traded, but who knows,” Shanahan said in May.
“That’s not a guarantee. It went on hold when it (surgery) happened. When he’s healthy we’ll see what happens.”
Awkward relationship
Garoppolo’s relationship with Shanahan has been in the spotlight since the coach’s remarks in April 2021. Back then, the 42-year-old coach said something sensitive that put his relationship with Garoppolo at risk.
“I can’t guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive on Sunday,” he said. “So I can’t guarantee who will be on our roster on Sunday.”
The 49ers GM John Lynch took a quick reaction to play down the situation, saying that Garoppolo had no hard feeling following Shanahan’s comment.
“Jimmy’s been a pro,” Lynch said. “He really has. I just spoke to him over the weekend. He’s here, he’s taking part in our virtual meetings, plans on being at the workouts. Jimmy’s been completely professional as he always has been with us.”
Speaking to ProFootballTalk, Shanahan regretted his comment. He said that he was just typically saying things the way he does. But considering Garoppolo’s contribution to the team, Shanahan knew that it was not something right to do to the quarterback.
“That’s the answer for every person on our team,” Shanahan said. “But Jimmy’s situation is, if he isn’t here on Sunday, I would be disappointed because Jimmy is a quarterback who’s played one year and took us to a Super Bowl and played at a very high level.”
