The New York Yankees defeated the Houston Astros in a four-game home series at Yankee Stadium on June 26, 2022, in New York City. The Yankees now have baseball’s best record and a 13-game lead in the American League East. The Astros lead the AL West by ten games and have the third-best record in the league.
After three Astros pitchers combined for a no-hitter on Saturday, Houston right-hander Jose Urquidy pitched into the seventh inning on Sunday. Giancarlo Stanton’s solo shot with one out in the seventh inning was New York’s first hit since the eighth inning of Friday’s loss. In between hits, those in pinstripes had made a whopping 52 outs. Despite the league’s best offense, the Yankees were able to break through and perform to their full potential.

Following a standing ovation from the Bronx’s 44,028 fans for DJ LeMahieu’s game-winning two-run homer in the eighth inning, New York won their tenth walk-off game of the season in the bottom of the tenth.
Aaron Judge launched a three-run homer into the visiting pitching staff in left-center field. It was Judge’s 28th home run of the season, his third walk-off hit of the year, and his fourth in his professional career.
After hitting his second walk-off homer of the season and the second game-winning hit of this series, Judge stated confidently that they always have a chance to win.
“I’ve been saying it for years, it doesn’t matter what the score is, what’s happened the [day] before in the series. Every time we get up there we have a chance to win a ballgame,”
The Yankees were on the verge of becoming the first team in MLB history to go no-hit in consecutive games before collapsing. Instead, New York won its 22nd comeback victory of the season, the most in the league this season.
The victory on Sunday also secured a series against Houston, which they will almost certainly need to defeat in October if they are to compete for the World Series. The Yankees now have history on their side when it comes to championships, which New York aspires to each season. Interested in betting on the Yankees? Find out how to bet on sports in New York.
Yankees step up their games
Stanton’s blow ended the Yankees’ hitless streak, and one inning later, DJ LeMahieu brought a sleepy Yankee Stadium to life with a game-tying two-run home run. Then, in the bottom of the tenth inning, AL MVP favorite Aaron Judge hit a three-run walk-off home run to send everyone home.
Judge hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning and this was his second walk-off hit against Houston in four days.
“These guys, they never waver,” Judge said. “They stick to their plan, stick to their approach and continue to grind it out. And then Big G hit one about 120 to center, so it was all good.”
Despite his recent slump, he was 8 for 48 ( .167) prior to the walk-off home run, Judge’s season point total of.294/.370/.643 with an MLB-leading 28 home runs remains impressive. Nobody else in the league has more than 22 home runs.
With this result, the Yankees improved to 53-20 and matched the third-best 73-game start in the MLB since 1930. They are only behind the 1998 Yankees and the 2001 Mariners.
It should be noted that Yankees right-handed pitcher Michael King secured the game in the top of the 10th inning by getting two pop-ups to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam.
