According to reports, the San Francisco 49ers will trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the team for NFL 2022 season. Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports said it was the announcement from the 49ers of choosing Trey Lance as starting quarterback that led to Garoppolo’s departure.
However, 49ers owner Jed York said that the 49ers decided to not trade Garoppolo soon, according to Tim Kawakami of the Athletic. Also, he said that having Lance as a starter with Garoppolo as the substitute was a good decision.
“I’ve said this before, you can’t have enough good quarterbacks and good football players,” york said.
“I’m not going to get into roster discussions and what John (Lynch) and Kyle (Shanahan) want to do. But I will support them in sort of anything that they want to make this team as good as it can possibly be,” he added.
At the same time, York said that the franchise was happy to keep Garoppolo on their roster, who remains under contract for the 2022 season.
York insisted on keeping Garoppolo because of his contribution to the team as one of the important players as a quarterback.
“I watched it with Joe (Montana) and Steve (Young), and I realize the salary cap is different today than having no salary cap. But we’ve said it before: We’re happy to keep Jimmy. We’re happy to have him on the roster. And if that’s the case, then that’s the case,” he said.
He referred to this condition when Joe Montana and Steve Young that were on the roster as high-quality quarterbacks in the 1980s. At that time, Young was a backup QB for Montana when the 49ers won back-to-back titles in the late 1980s. It was Montana, who missed the entire 1991 season due to injury and Young played as a starter to lead the 49ers to record a 10-6 win-loss record.
Playing as the 49ers’ first QB, Young has earned two MVP awards and led San Francisco to their Super Bowl win in 1994, and Montana, who was traded away from the Kansas City Chiefs on 1993, recently retired two years later.
Garoppolo’s condition
Currently, Garoppolo is excluding himself from teammates and is listed as the fourth quarterback on the 49ers’ depth chart to continue his shoulder recovery. However, Kawakami said that the 30-year-old will move to the team that is urging to have a world-class quarterback, like the Cleveland Browns, before August ends.
Meanwhile, according to Pro Football Talk, it was the $24,2 million base salary for 2022 that made Garoppolo remain with the 49ers. However, it was reported that the 49ers would have to wait several weeks for the Browns and other teams to make an offer to sign Garoppolo.
Even though, York and the 49ers are rumored to trade Garoppolo as they did with Montana, but, based on York’s recent statement, it will likely for the franchise to not trade away the quarterback, who last season helped the 49ers reach their second NFC Championship game in three years, according to sources.
