The 3M Open tournament returned to TPC Twin Cities on July 21-24, 2022. The tournament has completed its first few days, and the standings have been constantly changing since then. Some top players, such as Scott Piercy, made it to the weekend tournament, while some failed.
Piercy leads leaderboard, Grillo follows
Piercy’s Thursday game success was repeated on Friday as he successfully made the second-best round in round 2. He led the leaderboard with a total of eight strokes gained on Friday, despite having only one bogey in his first 36 holes.
“Obviously it feels great,” Piercy remarked
“It’s been a little bit since I’ve played like I feel like I should play. To kind of prove it to myself again, I know it’s in there, it’s just like, okay, how do we get it out of me,” he added.
Emiliano Grillo also played well in round 2, hitting 15 of 18 greens in regulation and making all of his putts within 10 feet. Grillo also had a good record on the 501-yard par-4 third hole, par-5 sixth hole, and par-4 seventh hole, which put him one, three, and four under for the round respectively.
Other players who had a good round in round two included the defending 3M Open champion, Cameron Champ, Rickie Fowler, and Maverick McNealy, who ultimately saved their place in the weekend tournament.
The unlucky ones
However, some players did not fare well in the second round and were forced to withdraw from the weekend game.
Davis Riley is one of the players who will be unable to compete in the weekend tournament. Despite previously being viewed as having a good chance of making the cut, especially after entering the week ranked No. 23 in the FedEx Cup standings. He only hit 8 greens in regulation in the first round of the event.
Harry Higgs is also on the list of those who did not make it to the weekend. He began his second weekend with three birdies and three bogeys in his second round. Higgs’ position of 142 in the FedEx Cup standings at the start of the week didn’t help him get to the weekend.
Moreover, Sahith Theegala is also having bad luck in the 3M Open. He made bogeys on four holes in the first round and was 2 under par for the round in the Friday game, even though he made four more bogeys and a double at No. 10.
Fans were also surprised that Richy Werenski was unable to attend the weekend. He finished T-3 in the 3M Open 2020 and later that year won the Barracuda Championship. Werenski began the week ranked 195th in the FedEx Cup point standings, which did not help him get into the weekend game.
Other players who did not participate in the weekend game include Adam Svensson, Dylan Frittelli, and Jeff Overton.
“If we don’t make the cut tomorrow, at least we’ll know where we’re at and we’ll have some work to do and continue to get ready for Korn (Ferry Tour) finals,” Overton said after his first round.
