Rhode Island Sportsbooks

The state of Rhode Island approved sports betting in June 2018 and was up and running by November of that same year. Rhode Island has two land-based sportsbooks and also takes online and mobile wagers.

Unfortunately, options are pretty limited in Rhode Island. Sportsbook Rhode Island is the app that is operated by William Hill, but the governing body for sports betting in RI is the state lottery. So William Hill is a partner in the retail sportsbooks at Twin Rivers Casino Hotel and Tiverton Casino Hotel, but Sportsbook Rhode Island is the online app available and William Hill is the only partner for the state at present.

That doesn’t give us a whole lot to review here at ATS, but you can check out several of the other states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire that have additional options.

A little-known fact about sports betting in the United States is that the littlest state in the country was among the first to adopt legalized sports betting. The state of Rhode Island launched just six months after PASPA was overturned by the US Supreme Court, but betting was limited to the retail sportsbooks in Lincoln and Tiverton.

With so many gambling dollars floating around across New England, it was important for Rhode Island to take the next step and adopt online sports betting. They did that in September of 2019 through the Sportsbook Rhode Island mobile app. International Game Technology, better known as IGT, was the technological partner for the app which is powered by William Hill.

Here is the best part: You have to sign up and place bets while in the state of Rhode Island, but you do NOT have to be a Rhode Island resident. In fact, the Tiverton property is right near the state of Massachusetts. You have to show up in person to validate your account and still have to make that short trip across the border to place your bets, but you can be a resident of any nearby state and still make your wagers.

William Hill runs the books at the Twin River Casino Hotel (Lincoln) and Tiverton Casino Hotel and is also the only operator in Rhode Island for online sports betting. With so many neighboring states pushing towards legislation, Rhode Island doubled down on its early start by adding the online component and things have been running smoothly ever since.

Because the app is backed by a worldwide powerhouse in William Hill, everything works as it should and all of the different sports betting markets that you’ve come to expect are being offered. One of the major selling points is that the app is the closest possible location to betting on the New England Patriots, but that isn’t the only reason to get involved.

You can bet on the NBA, NHL, college basketball, college football, boxing, tennis, MLB, soccer, and all of the usual suspects from the convenience of any computer or smart device. Just like every other state that offers sports betting, you must be in the proper location and GeoLocation technology will ensure that you are within the borders of Rhode Island and therefore eligible to make your bets.

The convenience of online and mobile betting is second to none, but the Twin River property does boast a magnificent Sportsbook Bar & Grill with 100s of TVs, odds boards like you would see in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, and a comfortable setting that provides an ideal viewing experience.

But, we all know the allure of mobile betting. Watching from home, where beer is cheap and food is readily available. No chair has even been as comfortable as the couch at home.

The entire process is really simple. You just visit the website or download the app and register your account with some basic personal information. You can register an account from anywhere, but you do need to confirm your email address after registering. Finally, you have to go to the Players Club at either Twin River or Tiverton in order to finalize and activate your account. Those safety and security measures are a necessary evil to make sure that you are of age and that you are who you say you are.

Unlike the setup in a lot of states, the Rhode Island lottery does work in concert with William Hill, so there is a deal in place that sends 51% of the revenue back into the state’s coffers. In other words, the Rhode Island Lottery worked out a deal for William Hill to run the sportsbooks rather than attempting to run them on their own.

This really is a sweet deal for all involved. The fact that residents of neighboring states can get accounts and make their bets, so long as they access the app from inside the state of Rhode Island, was a no-brainer given the small population of the state, but it means that a lot of money has been flowing into RI from Connecticut and Massachusetts, states that are lagging behind.

Keep in mind that when you bet in Rhode Island, you are betting with a trusted name in William Hill and for anybody up in the New England region, it is definitely worth your time to get an account going and start winning today.
