European Qualifying Picks and Predictions – June 10th
Sunday was break down during this Euro 2020 qualifying stage, but Saturday had plenty of action and one pretty big surprise. It is always tough to travel to Turkey and win, but France, the defending World Cup champions, were still huge favorites to do so. Turkey dominated for the majority of the game and came away with a massive 2-0 win over France to give them the edge in Group H. Other notable results were: Croatia over Wales, 2-1, Finland beating Bosnia & Herzegovina, 2-0, Germany traveling to Belarus and winning 2-0 and Scotland knocking off Cyrus 2-1.
Monday’s premier matchup is Spain holding Sweden, but the Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Norway and Denmark are also all in action.
Here are my picks for Monday’s Euro 2020 qualifying games.
Poland (-200) vs Israel (+550): Draw (+309)
The last two unbeaten in Group G meet Monday as Poland, who has nine points, welcome Israel, who has seven points, to Warsaw.
Krzysztof Piatek came on as a sub in the 46th minute, in Poland’s last game at North Macedonia, and did what he normally does by netting a goal just a minute later and helping Poland come away with a big three points. Poland has played three Euro 2020 qualifying games so far and they have won all three without giving up a single goal.
Israel went on the road, to Latvia, and received a hat trick from Eran Zahavi en route to a big 3-0 road win for the Israeli’s. Israel has also played three Euro 2020 qualifying games and have come away with two wins, against Latvia and Austria, and a draw against Slovenia.
I like Poland to get the win on Monday.
Poland leads the all-time series 5-3-2 and have won three of the last four games between these two. The two nations have not met since 2005 when Poland came away with a 3-2 friendly win.
Latvia (+500) vs Slovenia (-175): Draw (+280)
The two bottom teams in Group G do battle Monday with both teams needing a win in the worst way. Slovenia, sitting on two points, can get themselves right back into contention with a win, while Latvia, who has yet to register a point, is probably just playing for pride at this point.
Last time out Slovenia gave up a 74th minute goal to Guido Burgstaller, who just came on as a sub in the 71st minute, to fall 1-0 at Austria. So far, in the three Euro 2020 qualifying games, Slovenia drew 1-1 against both Israel and North Macedonia in addition to falling 1-0 to Austria.
Latvia hosted Israel, last time out, and were on the receiving end of a Eran Zahavi hat trick en route to a 3-0 home loss. Latvia has lost 3-1 to North Macedonia, 2-0 to Poland and 3-0 to Israel so far this qualifying campaign.
I like Slovenia to get the win on Monday.
These two nation shave met just three times previously with Slovenia leading the all-time series 2-0-1. The last time these two met, during a friendly in 2004, Latvia came away with a 1-0 win.
YTD Soccer Results: 89-84
The Euro 2020 qualifiers got back underway Friday with 12 matches and all results were basically as expected. Austria, Czech Republic, Spain, Israel, Georgia, Poland, Sweden and Ukraine all were able to get three points Friday. Denmark vs Ireland, Lithuania vs Luxembourg, Montenegro vs Kosovo and Norway vs Romania all ended in draws so each of those teams were at least able to get one point.
There are 13 games on Saturday with the two best games being Croatia hosting Wales and Greece hosting Italy. Iceland, Russia, Germany, Scotland and France are also all in action Saturday.
Here are my two best bets for Saturday’s Euro 2020 qualifying action.
Scotland (-189) vs Cyprus (+650): Draw (+320)
Scotland opened their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Kazakhstan. The Scots were able to come back and get a 2-0 road win at San Marino. Scotland sit in 5th place in Group 1, but are tied with four other teams for the 2nd spot with three points.
Cyprus opened their qualifying campaign with a 5-0 home win over San Marino and then fell to Group 1 favorites Belgium, at home, 2-0. Cyprus is one of the four teams tied for 2nd with three points.
I like Scotland to get the win Saturday.
Scotland leads the all-time series 5-0 and have outscored Cyprus by a score of 20-5. The two last met, in 2011, when Scotland came away with a 2-1 win in a friendly at home. The previous four games prior were all World Cup qualifying matches.
Croatia (-164) vs Wales (+55): Draw (+300)
Croatia enter Saturday off a tough 2-1 loss in their second Euro qualifying game back in March. The Croats did not look good in their opening game, a 2-1 win at home over Azerbaijan, and need to turn their form around as they are in a tough group for qualifying. Croatia currently sits on 4th, with three points, but are tied with three other teams for top of the group.
Wales started off their Euro 2020 qualifying with a 1-0 win over Slovakia. Slovakia were probably the better team, but Wales scored in the first five minutes and were able to keep the Slovak’s out of the net. Wales, who are currently one of three teams in Group E with three points, sit in second thanks to goal differential. They have also played one less game than the other three teams.
I like Croatia to get a big early win.
Croatia leads the all-time series 3-1-0 and have outscored Wales by a score of 6-2. The two last met in 2013, during World Cup qualifiers, when Croatia came away with a 2-1 victory in Wales.
