Eastern Conference Championship Favorites
Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers have won the Eastern Conference in two straight seasons, winning and losing one Stanley Cup Final over that span. Florida has had the number of the Boston Bruins in the postseason in the first two rounds of the playoffs in each of the last two years and have taken down the last team standing in the Metropolitan Division as well. This season, the Panthers will look to defend their Eastern Conference and Stanley Cup titles in the 2024-25 season, with the question being if they can simply sustain the level of play they have exhibited over the last couple of years.
New York Rangers
Last season, the New York Rangers won the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the highest point total in the NHL during the regular season. They made it to the Eastern Conference Final, but they fell short in that conference final against the Panthers. Next season, the Rangers are expected to be just as good as they were a season ago, with their big question mark being whether or not they can do enough in the playoffs to avoid wasting another year of Igor Shesterkin’s great goaltending.
Carolina Hurricanes
Right up there with the Panthers and Rangers on the list of NHL Eastern Conference title favorites are the Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina nearly finished ahead of the Rangers in the Metro Division standings last season, but couldn’t do that or beat the Rangers in the playoffs either. Only the Panthers had a better defense than the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference last season and that defense will be key if the Canes want to position themselves better for a run to the Stanley Cup Final.
Other NHL Eastern Conference Title Contenders
There is a group of three or four teams behind the top-three favorites listed above that also have a chance to win the Eastern Conference this season. The New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and Tampa Bay Lightning are all being given decent shots by oddsmakers to make a run to the Eastern Conference title. Toronto and Boston are especially interesting in this group, as one of them could easily get the job done if they can figure out how to get the better of the Panthers in a best-of-seven playoff series in the early rounds of the playoffs.
