A new week of NHL betting predictions begins at ATS with a battle of two of the game’s greatest goalscorers between Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. McDavid makes his only trip of the season to the nation’s capital and will hope to outscore Ovechkin, who is in pursuit of former Oilers great Wayne Gretzky’s career goalscoring record.
Oddsmakers expect McDavid and his pals to overpower the Capitals, listing the Oilers as -135 road moneyline favorites. Oilers vs Capitals betting odds also include the Capitals +115 moneyline price and the Oilers at +185 odds to cover the -1.5 puck line. The total for Monday night’s game is set at 6.5.

Why Bet The Oilers:
✅ Edmonton are incredible on the road so far this season. Entering Monday night’s game, the Oilers are unbeaten on the road with a perfect 3-0 record outside of Northern Alberta.
✅ The Oilers are scoring at a high clip. Edmonton holds the third highest goals per game average in the league with 3.83 goals per night.

✅ Washington lacks the firepower to match the Oilers potent offense. The Capitals only average 2.70 goals per game this season, fifth worst in the NHL.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oil head out to the East Coast looking to bounce back from a two game skid to end a three game homestand on a sour note. Edmonton fell to 7-5 on the season after a 6-2 drubbing on Saturday against the Dallas Stars, an uninspired effort where the Oilers weren’t truly in the game at any point.
Edmonton’s biggest issue early on in the season has been a lack of balance between their high flying attack and what they are getting from their defense. The Oilers are one of the highest scoring teams in the league and have one of the best powerplays, scoring 15 powerplay goals on 47 opportunities for a 31.9% success rate. Unfortunately, the Oilers give up 3.50 goals per game and have conceded 14 goals on the penalty kill out of 51 man disadvantages. Until the Oilers find a way to play defensive hockey at the level they play offensively, they won’t be a true contender.
Edmonton left town immediately after their flat effort against the Stars on Saturday afternoon, flying from Alberta to the United States’ capital to be well rested and prepared for an important start to a four game road trip. Monday’s Oilers vs Capitals game is the first of a stretch that is followed by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night, the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday and finally the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
The presence of a road back to back gives Oilers head coach Jay Woodcraft some deciding to do with regards to his goaltenders. Woodcraft needs to decide whether or not to play starter Jack Campbell – who is 1-1 lifetime against the Capitals with a 5-3 record on the season and a .870 save percentage – or backup Stuart Skinner who is 2-2 on the season with a much better .940 save percentage. Skinner has never played the Capitals in his career.

Washington Capitals
The Oilers are one of the last teams in the league the Capitals would want to see in the midst of a four game losing streak. Yet, the Capitals earned themselves the challenge of ending their losing streak against one of the NHL’s best road teams by losing a game they should have won on Saturday against the lowly Arizona Coyotes in a 3-2 meltdown.
Ovechkin and Anthony Mantha opened the scoring to give the Capitals a comfortable 2-0 lead early in the third period. That is where everything fell apart, with the Coyotes rallying to score three goals in the final frame to steal a late winner with just :36 left on the game clock.
Washington’s biggest issue this season has been mediocrity. The Capitals don’t do a single thing particularly well, fifth worst in the league in scoring and middle of the pack in goals allowed. Washington’s special teams is also ranked 15th (powerplay) and 14th (penalty kill) respectively at the time of writing as there isn’t a department the Capitals can call themselves elite in at the moment.
Expected Capitals starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper has plenty of experience facing the Oilers. The former Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche netminder has an outstanding 10-2-4 record against the Oilers in 16 games played against them. Kuemper’s numbers this season have been solid, a 2.42 goals against average and a .919 save percentage for the veteran netminder who joined the team after guiding the Avs to the Stanley Cup last summer.
