Then there were four. We’re down to Conference Finals in the pursuit of the Stanley Cup and the Carolina Hurricanes may be the most surprising team still remaining. After being down 0-2 to the defending champion Washington Capitals in the first round, the Hurricanes stormed back to take the series in Game 7. The Hurricane then rolled through a tough defensive New York Islanders team in four games.
The Boston Bruins needed seven games to eliminate the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round. After trailing 2-1 in the series to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second round, the Bruins put together three straight wins to get themselves a spot in the Eastern Finals.
Boston will be without defenseman Charlie McAvoy due to a one-game suspension for an illegal check against Columbus in Game 6. The Hurricanes fortunes are a little better as their extended time off has allowed goalie Petr Mrazek time to recover from a lower-body injury that occurred in Game 2 and caused him to miss the rest of the series. Coach Rod Brind’Amour has yet to declare a starting goalie for tonight’s game.
Boston is known for its defense (third-best in the NHL with 2.59 goals allowed per game), but with the way the Hurricanes handled the defense of the Islanders, it appears Carolina won’t be phased by the Bruins. Even more impressive was winning the last two games of the previous series with their back-up goalie.
Boston’s David Pastrnak is tied with Carolina’s Teuvo Teravainen with the most goals in the East this postseason with six. Each player will be key for their team in this series and the guy with the most goals between the two could be the one to move on to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Bruins won two-of-the-three games during the regular season and start the series off at home. However, Carolina is not the same team they were during the regular season, as they have greatly improved (currently have a six-game winning streak). I expect this to be a great series and Game 1 will be no different. Look for Carolina to steal Game 1 in Boston in a physical low-scoring game.
