The Dallas Stars take on the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday, September 14, in Game 5 of their 2020 Stanley Cup Western Conference semifinals series.
The third-seeded Stars are only a game away from their first Stanley Cup Finals since 2000, while the Golden Knights desperately need a win to prolong their season, so excitement is guaranteed at Rogers Place in Edmonton this Monday.
We’ve prepared the best betting pick for Game 5 between the Stars and Knights along with the latest odds update an all-important betting tips and notes, so let’s take a closer look.
The Stars miss defenseman Stephen Johns and center Radek Faksa, while goalie Ben Bishop and center Roope Hintz are listed as doubtful. The Knights might be without winger Tomas Nosek.
The bookies continue to list the Golden Knights as favorites in this series even though they are 3-1 down. Vegas opened as a -170 fave on DraftKings with a total of 5.0 goals, while the Stars are listed as +155 moneyline dogs.
What’s at Stake?
As I’ve mentioned above, the Stars need one more win to qualify for the Stanley Cup Finals, while the Knights’ season is on the line.
The Stars have upset the odds in three of their previous four outings, so their confidence must be sky-high. On the other side, the Golden Knights will try to avoid their first three-game losing streak this postseason. They’ve dropped five of their previous seven contests.
If the Dallas Stars make it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 20 years, Anton Khudobin would be their hero. The 34-year-old goaltender is enjoying a wonderful postseason, posting an 11-6 record with a 2.67 GAA and a .918 save percentage.
Khudobin was terrific in the previous two contests against the Knights, turning aside 38 shots in Game 3 and 32 shots in Game 4 to help his team top their rivals.
The Golden Knights took 13 shots more than the Stars in Game 4 (33-20). They also took the lead in the second period, but the Stars overcame it before the start of the last 20 minutes. Joe Pavelski scored his ninth goal of the postseason, while Jamie Benn netted his seventh goal in the 2020 Stanley Cup.
Vegas desperately need more from their forwards, especially from Mark Stone who’s recorded only one assist over his previous five outings. Robin Lehner allowed five goals on 43 shots over the last two games, so Marc-Andre Fleury could get a chance to be the Knights’ savior.
Anyway, the Knights have to improve offensively or they will be eliminated from the playoffs. The Stars found their defensive mojo after some struggling through the postseason. Dallas had the second-best D in the regular season, yielding just 2.52 goals per contest.
I would be surprised if the Stars eliminate the Knights in five games. Also, I’m a big fan of Anton Khudobin, but the Golden Knights will be fired up in this one, playing with their back against the wall.
There’s a lot of experienced players among the Knights, and they should deal with pressure well, so I’m going with Vegas to win straight up and force another clash in the Western Conference Finals. They’ve scored only four goals in four encounters with the Stars in this series, while the Knights have netted 10 times in three matchups with the Stars this term before they opened the conference finals.
Vegas is 8-5 in its 13 meetings with Dallas, and the under has hit nine times in that span.
