Two West Virginia Sportsbooks Suspend Operations

Issues with two West Virginia sportsbooks have led to the temporary suspension of all sports betting activity at the two tracks, including bets being placed through the BetLucky app. Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack and Mardi Gras Casino & Resort suspended operations last Thursday.

A spokesperson for Delaware North, the company that owns both Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras, confirmed the suspension on Friday and issued a statement.

“We have been informed by Miomni Gaming, our sports wagering platform provider in West Virginia, that they have encountered a contract dispute with a third-party technology supplier. This has resulted in the interruption of the Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras sports-betting operations as well as the BetLucky.com mobile app from accepting new sports wagers. We are honoring and redeeming all resulted bets and are working to determine a time frame for restoration. We apologize for this interruption in service.”

Both sportsbooks inside the two casinos, as well as the mobile sports betting app, have been down since Wednesday night.

Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras are the only two of the state’s five casinos that offer mobile betting through the BetLucky app. West Virginia joined New Jersey and Nevada as the only states to offer legal mobile sports betting.

The West Virginia Lottery is monitoring the situation and communicating with all parties involved to help ensure a resolution as soon as possible.

Lottery Director John Myers said on Friday that Delaware North could not provide a time frame for when the contractual disputes will be resolved.

“We’re obviously hoping it’s a matter of days and not months,” said Myers.

Myers also said that sportsbooks at the other casinos in the state are unaffected by the Delaware North situation.

Delaware North has set up hotline numbers for players with questions about the shutdown.
