The PGA Tour holds its first full-field event this week, jumping over to Waialae Country Club after last week’s Tournament of Champions in Maui. The Sony Open will feature a field that sees six of the current Top-8 among the FedEx Cup teeing it up, as well as some other big names and past winners. With a deep group teeing up, here’s our golf betting picks for the week.

Why Bet On Russell Henley:
✅ Henley has a history of success in this event, winning it back in 2013, and finishing as the runner-up last season, when he really should have won it. The course isn’t super long, but requires accuracy, and that’s the strength of his game.
✅ Henley also flies in somewhat under the radar at this event, entering with just the fifth-best odds behind the four major names in front of him.
✅ Henley also gets a bump because of a big factor that’s been a predictor of success at the Sony Open: Playing in the Tournament of Champions last week. Since the Tournament of Champions was moved to Hawaii for the 1999 season, 17 of the 24 Sony Opens since then have been won by players who played at the Tournament of Champions.

Sony Open Course Breakdown
Waialae Country Club is a far cry from what the 39 players who played in the Tournament of Champions saw last week. Rather than rely on length and hitting it almost anywhere they want, the Sony Open stretches to just over 7,000 yards, short by PGA Tour standards, but is tree-lined and features heavy bunkering. Players who are accurate off the tee typically see an advantage, which is one reason to avoid one of the favorites in Jordan Spieth this week.
Other Golfers Who Can Win the Sony Open
Tom Kim is the current betting favorite at +1100, due both to his recent hot play (wins in August and October, 5th last week) and his fantastic ball-striking abilities. This is his debut at the event, which could be a deterrent, as experience has helped in the past.
JT Poston is a good mid-field pick at +5000, and typically plays well at courses that are on the shorter side. He finished 21st last week in Maui.
Tom Hoge (+2500) was a quiet third last week in Maui, but caught fire in the fourth round, firing the second best round of the day a -9 to finish the week at -23. His game is rounding into shape and should see him in contention come Sunday.
