NL MVP Contenders
Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers
Shohei Ohtani is once again the favorite to win the NL MVP award as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani won the NL MVP last season, winning the AL MVP the year before that with the Angels. Ohtani did not pitch during the regular season in 2024 as he recovered from an arm injury. But the fact that we could see him on the mound in some capacity this year should only add to his value as he and the Dodgers are expected to dominate their competition in 2025.
Juan Soto, New York Mets
Also in the mix to win the NL MVP award is Juan Soto of the New York Mets. The Mets landed Soto this offseason, getting him after Soto had a big year for the rival New York Yankees in 2024. Soto will need to shake off the fact that the Mets are cursed as an organization and the fact that other great players have been disappointing for this franchise in the recent past. But if he can put up big numbers in spite of all of that history, Soto could grab individual hardware over Ohtani and the rest of the field.
Fernando Tatis Jr., San Diego Padres
Fernando Tatis Jr. missed a lot of time for the San Diego Padres in 2024, missing 60 games in total. He only hit 21 home runs and will look to have a much bigger year in 2025. We all know that Tatis has the talent to put up big enough numbers to contend for this award. But the question for Tatis will be whether or not he can actually live up to his vast potential to put himself on the short list of contenders to win this honor as the season goes on.
Other NL MVP Contenders
The odds for players who are not Ohtani and Soto have the potential to be enticing in the race for NL MVP. Players like Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies, Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, and Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks all have the potential to rise above the favorites to win this award in 2025. But to do that, they will have to have monster seasons to offset everything that Ohtani is able to do for the Dodgers.
