Those willing to travel to place their bets would have had options, but there were three retail options in Detroit. Barstool Sportsbook at Greektown, BetMGM Sportsbook at MGM Grand Detroit, and FanDuel Sportsbook at MotorCity Casino were the three brick-and-mortar sportsbooks available to those in the metro area. Now that sports betting is online and mobile, operators like DraftKings, BetRivers, PointsBet, William Hill, Fox Bet, WynnBET, and TwinSpires are all available to those in Detroit.

That is because online and mobile betting is essential for any state that wants to make actual tax revenue from wagering. Fortunately, Michigan had the foresight to do that. Sports betting actually went live in March 2020, right before sports shut down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. A series of delays followed that pushed online and mobile betting back into the New Year, but it is here and provides unrivaled convenience for everybody in Michigan, but especially those in Detroit.

Let’s face it, from a betting handle standpoint, access to the Detroit metro area is paramount for each and every operator. Detroit ranks in the top 15 in metro population size in the United States. Over 40% of Michigan’s population resides in the Detroit metro area. It was essential to open the state up for mobile and online betting. In fact, Michigan even went one step further and has opened up online casino wagering as well through the different sports betting operators that have those capabilities.

That means you can bet on sports from Comerica Park, Little Caesars Arena, Ford Field, the bar, the boat, the car (responsibly, of course), class at Wayne State or Detroit Mercy, the top floor of the GM Building, the bottom floor of the Fox Theatre, the break room from the assembly line, wherever you want, so long as it takes place in the state of Michigan.

When it comes to available sportsbooks, the list is certainly growing in Michigan and you have a ton of options.

How do I bet on sports in Detroit? We’ll tell you what to do, where you can bet, how to sign up, and how to bet on sports in Michigan.

  1. Pick the right sportsbook – The first step in getting started is to figure out where you want to bet. Each sportsbook is different in its own way. Some offer betting sign-up bonuses, but odds that have higher vig than others. Some offer fairer odds, but fewer promotions and lower sign-up bonuses. Some use more of a “dark mode” layout and others are brighter.

It all depends on what you want in a sportsbook. What do you prioritize? Do you want bells and whistles or all business? Our sportsbook reviews here at ATS can help you decide.

2. Create a sportsbook account – Once you’ve decided where to start, it is time to create your account. Michigan is a Remote Registration state, so you can sign up from anywhere. That means going to the ‘Register’ or ‘Sign Up’ page and entering your personal information. Every bit of info is required to validate your identity and confirm that you are of legal gambling age.

Don’t worry because these sportsbooks use state-of-the-art encryption technology and cybersecurity measures to keep your information safe and protected.

3. Fund your account – Once you have your account registered and validated, you will need to put money in it. Making a deposit is a simple, straightforward process. Most sportsbooks accept a variety of funding methods, like credit or debit card or electronic bank transactions like ACH, e-check, or bank wire.

Be sure when you make a deposit that you are getting a deposit bonus. Clicking through one of our sign-up links at should automatically trigger a deposit bonus when you fund your account. Don’t get shut out on those. They are a big help to starting your bankroll and a huge perk for signing up.

4. Start sports betting – It is important to know what you are doing. Know your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to reading the betting market, understanding the odds, and placing bets in the sports or on the teams that you know best.

Furthermore, don’t bet above your means. Don’t get into a situation where you are left to decide between placing bets or paying bills. If you can’t afford to bet what you are betting, make smaller bets or simply don’t bet at all. Don’t go overboard with it. Bet within your means. Some sportsbooks even offer the opportunity to set daily, weekly, or monthly limits for yourself. Consider that when picking a sportsbook if you are uncertain of your ability to bet responsibly.

Because of mobile and online sports betting, all sportsbooks with a license in the state of Michigan are available to Detroit residents.

As far as retail sportsbooks, for those that want the old-school experience, Barstool Sportsbook operates at Greektown Casino in the heart of downtown near some great food and Comerica Park and Ford Field. BetMGM Sportsbook is housed at MGM Grand Detroit where I-75 and the John C Lodge Freeway meet. Finally, MotorCity Casino is just a little bit northwest just off of Grand River Avenue with a FanDuel Sportsbook.

All three of those are retail and mobile betting options for Detroiters. All other sportsbooks are available online or mobile only, unless you want to make a drive away from the city.

We’ll start with the top US sportsbooks in our minds and then mention the other options for you in Michigan as well.

BetMGM Sportsbook is a trusted and reputable name around the world in the gaming industry. Because MGM has a lot of other ways to improve the bottom line, they can offer very fair odds in their sportsbook. They aren’t reliant on sports betting margins to generate profits like some of the other sportsbook companies. As a result, bettors will often find some of the best odds with them.

As a global leader in gaming, the BetMGM Casino will also be a popular platform in tandem with a BetMGM Sportsbook that has odds listed on all sorts of major and minor sporting events from around the world with an easy-to-use interface that is battle-tested from being one of the first sports betting apps in Nevada long before legalization in the US was a thing.

You can get a 100% Deposit Match Bonus up to $500 at BetMGM Michigan.

BetRivers is a very popular name in the Rust Belt, running from Pittsburgh west through Chicago with stops along the way in Indiana and now Michigan. BetRivers also operates in other states, but it seems to have its strongest share of the market in that corridor. This is a sharp, sleek app with excellent technological capabilities due to partnerships with Rush Street Interactive and Kambi.

This is often thought to be one of the best apps from a live betting standpoint. BetRivers partnered with the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and the Little River Casino Resort in Manistee to offer sports betting and also online casino play in the state of Michigan.

You can get a 100% Deposit Match Bonus up to $250 at BetRivers Michigan.

Online and mobile betting is a huge help for DraftKings Sportsbook Michigan. They partnered in the upstate with Bay Mills Casino and Resort and that is a hike from Detroit. Fortunately, with online and mobile betting, DraftKings might as well have a sports betting counter right in your living room because it is just that easy to bet on sports.

DraftKings Sportsbook has more of a “Dark Mode” approach to its look, with white and light green font on a dark grey backdrop. Many like a lot of things about DraftKings, including the look. Even if the look isn’t for you, the extensive collection of prop betting odds and futures betting opportunities will be for you.

You can get up to a $1,000 Welcome Bonus with a Risk-Free Bet and a Deposit Match Bonus at DraftKings Michigan.

FanDuel has a clean-cut look with traditional whites and blues and seems to be the most user-friendly of the sports betting apps. The ability to parlay props and bet into fair and reasonable numbers has resonated quite well with users of the FanDuel app and it will likely be the most popular app in Michigan.

You can get up to a $500 Risk-Free Bet when you sign up at FanDuel Michigan.

PointsBet Sportsbook made a splash in Michigan quickly by formulating some partnerships with the pro teams, including the Detroit Tigers. PointsBet has a partnership through the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians to offer sports betting in the state through the Northern Waters Casino. Again, another property that would be tough to reach from Detroit, but not with online and mobile betting.

PointsBet is a really interesting company. They’ve taken a very strong player-forward approach with lots of promotions and offers plus the higher-risk, higher-reward PointsBetting style of wagering. It is a very unique sportsbook to say the least.

You can get a 100% Deposit Match Bonus up to $250 or two Risk-Free Bets worth up to $1,000 when you sign up at PointsBet Michigan.

William Hill

William Hill Sportsbook has locations up in the northern part of the state at Leelanau Sands and Turtle Creek near Traverse City. If there are sportsbooks, William Hill is running at least one of them. William Hill US began in 2012, but the company has been in operation since 1934 in London.

A long, tenured history certainly makes William Hill a trusted and reputable name in the business. They’ve partnered with the Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians to offer sports betting in Michigan and should be a popular sportsbook because of the name and the weight that it carries.

You can get up to a $500 Risk-Free Bet when you sign up at William Hill Michigan.

Other Detroit Sportsbooks
