SuperBook USA in Las Vegas is truly a sight to behold. It is a destination in the grandest destination of them all. It is widely regarded as the most impressive sportsbook in the United States, if not the world.
While that grandeur may be reserved for Las Vegas, the SuperBook is taking its show on the road now with a partnership to run the SuperBook at the Lodge Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado.
Colorado approved sports betting by right around 20,000 votes during the November 2019 general election. A start date of May 1 was set shortly thereafter. Of course, that was before we knew that the world of sports was going to abruptly stop due to COVID-19, but Colorado was going to be one of several states to begin taking legal sports wagers in 2020.
The state was going to be a competitive market from the jump. Online and mobile betting were going to be available from the jump and the state had 33 casinos worth of licenses to dole out. The Colorado Division of Gaming was going to oversee the process, with one partner available to each of the 33 casinos. A low, friendly tax rate was going to enhance the fervor from the operators to get set up in the state.
Colorado is expected to be a state that strongly represents a cross-section of betting in the United States as we know it. Proven retail brands were going to try their best to get licenses and it was a given that the DFS operators turned sports betting stalwarts like DraftKings and FanDuel were going to play a big role.
What we didn’t know was that Las Vegas-based brands like Circa Sports and the SuperBook were going to be such big players. It does make sense with both, but especially the SuperBook, as Executive Vice President of Operations Jay Kornegay is a Colorado native and had to be thrilled with the opportunity to get something going in his home state.
Plans are also starting to take shape for the world-famous SuperContest to plant its roots in Colorado as well. SuperBook paired up with Jacobs Entertainment, Inc. to make the deal happen. Black Hawk Casino is about an hour outside of Denver on a day with good weather, which can be touch and go in the wintertime, but the presence of mobile and online betting from anywhere in the state is sure to help.
It remains to be seen what Colorado’s betting handles will be, but with so many of the retail sportsbooks in Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek, the vast majority of the handle will be of an online and mobile nature.
Colorado will be a hotbed for a lot of sports betting and it makes sense that the SuperBook would be a big part of it. After serving as such an iconic fixture at the Las Vegas Hotel, the LV Hilton, and then now at the Westgate, this wound up being the perfect opportunity for the SuperBook to branch out and could be the start of something special in a national sense for a world-renowned brand.
