The final two quarterfinals are set to take place Saturday as Germany takes on Sweden and the Netherlands battle Italy.
Who join England and the USA in the 2019 Women’s World Cup semifinals? Below are my picks for the final two semifinal games.
Netherlands (+104) vs Italy (+260): Draw (+229)
The Netherlands extended their winning streak to eight games with a late 2-1 win over Japan. The Dutch looked like they were headed to extra time, but an 88th minute handball gave the Netherlands a handball and the Dutch capitalized. Each team has scored in the last three Netherlands games.
The Italians took advantage of facing an offensively challenged team, in China, during the Round of 16 and came away with a 2-0 win. Italy has never progressed to the semifinals of the World Cup, but a strong defense, and a great counter attack, give them hope in this one.
I like this one to end as a draw in regulation and for Italy to advance after extra time.
These two nations have met four times in the past and it is the Netherlands that holds a 2-2-0 leads in the series. The two nations have not met since 2014 when the Netherlands came away with a 2-1 win in World Cup qualifying.
Germany (-154) vs Sweden (+450): Draw (+260)
Germany now have not lost in 15 games, and have won five in a row, after a dominant 3-0 win over Nigeria in the Round of 16. Germany have now outscored opponents 9-0 this World Cup and have scored seven goals their last two games.
Sweden bounced back from a final group stage loss to the USA to knock off Canada 1-0 in the Round of 16. The Sweden defense did what it normally does, with a penalty stop from the goaltender, as Sweden have now allowed 0 goals in four of their last six games.
I like Germany to continue their dominance in this matchup.
These two nations have met 25 times in the past and it is Germany that leads the series 16-5-4. Germany are undefeated in the last five games between these two and have not lost in this series since 2015.
