The 2019 Women’s World Cup final is set for Sunday, in Lyon, as the reigning World Champions, the USA, take on the reigning European champions, Netherlands. Neither team has lost a game during their path to the final.

The Americans are the most decorated women’s team in the world having qualified for all eight Women’s World Cups, winning three, being the runner-up once and finishing in third place three times in their previous seven appearances.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, are participating in just their second Women’s World Cup and Sunday will be their first finals appearance. The Dutch made in to the Round of 16 in their first World Cup appearance, in 2015, but have been on the rise since as they claimed the European Championship in 2017.

Who will win the 2019 Women’s World Cup? Below is my pick for USA vs Netherlands.

USA (-278) vs Netherlands (+800): Draw (+350)

The USA needed a big penalty stop to put away England and secure their spot in the 2019 Women’s World Cup final. Alyssa Naeher came up big in the 84th minute when she dove to her right and stopped a penalty by Stephanie Houghton. The USA have outscored their opponents 24-3 during their six games so far which was greatly helped by their opening 13-0 thumping against Thailand. After that 13-0 win, the USA took off Chile 3-0, then beat Sweden 2-0 before beating Spain 2-1 in the Round of 16, France 2-1 in the quarterfinals and then England 2-1 in the semifinals.

The Netherlands used extra time magic to beat Sweden and clinch their spot in the 2019 Women’s World Cup final. It was deadlocked 0-0 through regulation, but in the 99th minute Jackie Groenen put the Dutch ahead and they never looked back. The defending European champions have outscored opponents 11-3 during their six World Cup games. Netherlands opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over New Zealand, then beat Cameroon 3-1 before rounding out the group stage with a 2-1 win over Canada. In the knockout stages the Netherlands beat Japan 2-1 in the Round of 16, Italy 2-0 in the quarterfinals and Sweden 1-0 in the semifinals.

The Americans go back-to-back and win their fourth Women’s World Cup title.

These two nations have met twice in the past and the USA won both meetings 3-1. The last meeting took place during a 2016 friendly when the USA used two second half goals, one own goal, to defeat the Dutch.
