The European weekend gets started in a big way, with big games all over the country, but the one with the biggest impact takes place in Spain as seventh place Valencia take on fourth place Atletico Madrid on Friday February 14, 2020. Both teams will be looking for a big three points as there are six teams competing for the final two Champions League spots and the two Europa League spots in La Liga.
Valencia enter the weekend in seventh place, one spot out of European competition, but in an extremely tight race with five other teams for four European spots. Valencia are five points behind Getafe and two points behind Atletico Madrid, who are occupying the last two Champions League spots, two points behind fifth place Sevilla and tied in points with Real Sociedad who currently occupy the final European spot. Valencia also have just a two point lead over eighth place Villarreal and a six point lead over Athletic Bilbao in ninth – it is very tight in Spain right now. Los Ches are also preparing for a Round of 16 Champions League showdown with Atalanta next week.
Atletico Madrid are one of the six teams fighting for those final four European positions as they currently occupy the final Champions League spot, but are tied on points with fifth place Sevilla. Atleti have a massive Round of 16 Champions League match-up with, the best club in Europe this season, Liverpool next week.
Below is my pick for the La Liga action between Valencia and Atletico Madrid. All odds are from FanDuel Sportsbook.
Valencia (+210) vs Atletico Madrid (+145) Draw (+210)
Valencia dropped a big road game last weekend as they were defeated by fellow Champions League hopefuls Getafe 3-0. It was a tight first half, that ended 0-0, but Getafe came out firing scoring two goals in the first 22 minutes of the half to put this game away. The hosts added a late goal after Valencia went down to 10 men in the 78th minute. Valencia have now lost two straight games, across all competitions, and the loss snaps their two game La Liga winning streak. Los Ches are a top three home team in La Liga having won 26 points from a possible 36 – they are also one of just three unbeaten teams at home this season.
It was boring, but Atletico Madrid finally got back to their winning ways with a dull 1-0 win over Granada last weekend. Atleti got a goal from Angel Correa just six minutes in they proceeded to play tight defense and come away with the much needed win. The win snapped Atletico Madrid’s five game winless streak, across all competitions, and was their first win in La Liga since early January. Atleti are a mid-table road club in La Liga having won just 14 points from a possible 33.
Series History: In the last ten match-ups between these two Atletico Madrid has dominated going 6-4-0 and have not lost to Valencia since October 2014.
Game Prediction: I think Atleti are about to go on a little run in La Liga, so I am backing Atletico Madrid +145 Friday.
2020 Results: 13-11
