The Champions League semifinals are here, and things heat up on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, when surprising RB Leipzig faces off against a resilient PSG team in Lisbon. RB Leipzig pulled off a surprising win over Atletico Madrid in the quarters, while PSG scored two goals in stoppage time to get by Atalanta. This game will air live on Univision, TUDN, and CBS All Access at 3:00 p.m. EST.
Both teams have been impressive in the knockout stage, but RB Leipzig has certainly had the harder path. PSG reached this stage with a routine two-legged win over Borussia Dortmund and then beat Italian darlings Atalanta. RB Leipzig had to face Premier League side Tottenham in the Round of 16 and a red-hot Atletico Madrid team to reach the quarterfinals.
Below is my pick for the Champions League action between PSG and RB Leipzig. All odds are from BetMGM Sportsbook.
Match Odds: PSG (-135) vs RB Leipzig (+340) Draw (+300)
PSG faced a fun Atalanta side and looked like they were going to be upset, but the Parisian side was resilient and ended up coming away with a 2-1 win. Atalanta got on the board first with a beautiful curler by Mario Pasalic in the 27th minute. PSG were all over Atalanta in the second half, but it appeared that it was no their night and this game would end 1-0. Until, a beautiful Neymar pass helped Marquinhos slot the ball into an empty net to make it 1-1 in the 90th minute. Extra time looked all but certain, but PSG had other things in mind and Kylian Mbappe produced a brilliant cross to allow Maxim Choupo-Moting to caress the ball in the net and give PSG the win in the 93rd minute. It was an incredible comeback by PSG and one that could help them lift the Champions League trophy.
RB Leipzig were the heavy underdogs against an in-form Atletico Madrid team, but the German side did not care and utterly controlled the Spanish side, finishing with a 2-1 win. Leipzig got on the scoreboard first thanks to a Dani Olmo header in the 51st minute, but Atleti fought back and Joao Felix slotted home a 71st minute penalty to tie it up. This game appeared to be heading to extra time, but a Tyler Adams deflected goal in the 88th minute gave Leipzig the lead and the win. It was a great showing for Leipzig and one not many expected after losing Timo Werner and having an inconsistent end to the Bundesliga season.
Series History: This will be the first competitive match these two teams have played, but RB Leipzig did win a club friendly 4-2 back in 2014.
Soccer Predictions & Tips: This should be an electric game Tuesday night and I like Paris Saint-Germain to come away with a narrow victory.
