Friday will pit the best team in the West, and in the MLS, Los Angeles FC vs the worst team in the West Colorado. Also on the schedule is an Eastern Conference battle between the New York Red Bulls, who are in 5th in the East, hosting the Chicago Fire who are currently in 8th place.
Below are my picks for Friday’s MLS games.
New York Red Bulls (-105) vs Chicago Fire (+275): Draw (+250)
The New York Red Bulls enter play Friday on the heels of back-to-back losses, on in the US Open Cup and one in the MLS, as NYRB look to pull further away from the bottom of the playoff positions. NYRB will be without Aaron Long (USA), Michael Amir Murillo (Panama), Kemar Lawrence (Jamaica) and Derrick Etienne (Haiti) who are all on international duty at either the Gold Cup or Copa America. New York has gotten 16 points at home after going 5-1-3 in eight games.
The Chicago Fire enter play Friday on the heels of a six game winless streak and will be looking for their first win since May 11th. The Fire will be without Francisco Calvo (Costa Rica) and Djorde Mihailovic (USA) who are at the Gold Cup. Chicago have gotten just three points on the road as they have a terrible 0-3-5 record.
I like the NYRB to get the win Friday night.
These two teams have met 40 times in their past and it is Chicago who holds a slight 17-9-14 win in the series. Chicago won the earlier meeting this season, at home, 1-0.
Los Angeles FC (-152) vs Colorado Rapids (+400): Draw (+275)
LAFC are flying high as they currently have the most points in the MLS, are unbeaten in 10 straight games and are currently on a four game unbeaten fun. LAFC will be without Tyler Miller (USA), Walker Zimmerman (USA) Mark-Anthony Kaye (Canada) and Peter Lee-Vassell (Jamaica) as they are all representing their countries at the Gold Cup. LAFC have 22 points from eight home games as they have gone 7-1-0.
Colorado enter in the midst of trying to turn their terrible start to 2019 around. The Rapids are winless in their last two games, but prior to that were unbeaten in five games and won four of those five games. Colorado will be without Jonathan Lewis who is representing the USA at the Gold Cup. The Rapids have gotten five points from eight games as they post a 1-2-5 record.
LAFC continue their good form and extend their lead in the West.
The two teams met twice last season, in LAFC’s inaugural season, and it was the new expansion team coming away with two wins by a combined 5-0.
