Manchester City

City saw their Premier League title hopes take a massive hit on the weekend with a loss to Manchester United followed by Arsenal’s win over Tottenham in the North London Derby. Arsenal now sit eight points clear of City, which makes every match a must win the rest of the way if they are to have a chance to chase down the Gunners.

Defending has been an issue of late for City, who conceded twice in their last two matches to Southampton and then to United. Jack Grealish put City in front in the 60th minute before poor defending and a controversial goal gave United a 2-1 win through Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

Failure to defend a lead also cost City this fixture against Tottenham last season. Harry Kane’s late heroics famously gave Spurs a win in the dying moments and is a result City will desperately want to avoid a second time. It is likely City will get a goal and a lead in this match but the biggest question will be if they can keep Spurs from scoring enough to earn the three points.

Tottenham

Tottenham are in turmoil and are suddenly in danger of manager Antonio Conte’s run at the club ending in complete failure. Spurs’ second loss to Arsenal this season not only was disappointing due to the defeat to their rivals but also because it saw the club fall five points behind the Top 4.

Goalkeeping was Spurs biggest issue in their North London Derby loss to Arsenal. Hugo Lloris made multiple goalkeeping miscues to concede Arsenal goals and his confidence is a big storyline at the moment. If Lloris remains as goalkeeper he will have plenty of opportunities to redeem himself against City’s high opportunity creating attack but could also crumble his confidence if the goals pile up.

Harry Kane will need to score if Spurs are to replicate their recent success over City. They will also need to get a lot better performance from Son Heung-min. Son was crucial in the wins over City last season but hasn’t been at his usual level during the 2022-23 campaign. Without Son’s creativity and magic, Spurs struggle to counterattack and will need that playmaking to make the most of their chances against a possession heavy opponent in City.
