One of the more lopsided, on paper, Champions League Round of 16 match-ups takes us to France as Ligue One’s Lyon hosts Serie A’s Juventus on Wednesday February 26, 2020. These two clubs have had drastically different seasons and it should be a pretty straightforward two legs for Juventus.
Lyon enter this match-up in seventh place in Ligue One, but are still very alive for a Champions League spot next season. The club is currently sitting on 37 points and trail third place Rennes, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot, by seven points and fourth place Lille, who occupy the Europa League spot, by six points. Lyon also need to hop fifth place Monaco, who sit on 39 points, and sixth place Strasbourg, who sit on 38 points, to get into Europe next season. Lyon are still alive in their two domestic cups as well as they prepare to face PSG in the semi-finals of the Coupe de France and the final of the Coupe de Ligue. It is going to be a busy end of season for Lyon.
Juventus begin their Champions League knockout stages atop Serie A, but locked in a tight three team race. The team from Turin currently leads Lazio by one point and Inter by six points, though Inter have a game in hand due to most of the Sunday Serie A schedule being postponed due to coronavirus concerns. Besides for the Serie A title race, and this Champions League Round of 16, Juventus also have a semi-final match-up with AC Milan in the Coppa Italia next week.
Below is my pick for the Champions League action between Lyon and Juventus. All odds are from FanDuel Sportsbook.
Lyon (+340) vs Juventus (-115) Draw (+240)
Lyon pushed their unbeaten run to three games with a comfortable 2-0 road win over relegation candidate Metz. The club scored a goal during stoppage time in each half, and were up a man for the final 15 minutes, in their final warm-up game before this Round of 16 clash with Juventus. Lyon are unbeaten in eight of their last 10 games and have compiled six wins during that span. At home, Lyon have not been good this season as they have won just 16 points thanks to a 4-4-4 record at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
Juventus continued their winning ways with a 2-1 road win over bottom of the table Spal. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 39th minute and Aaron Ramsey pushed the lead to two in the 60th, but Juventus were unlucky to only win this one 2-1. Regardless, it was a solid performance for the club as they get ready for this match-up with Lyon. Juventus are now unbeaten in three straight games and have seven wins over their last 10 games across all competitions. Away from Turin, Juventus have won 26 points thanks to an 8-2-3 record.
Series History: These two clubs have met five times in the past and it is Juventus who holds a perfect 4-1-0 record. In European competition Juventus leads 3-1-0 and have never given up more than one goal against Lyon.
ATS Pick: I don’t see Juventus having any issues in either leg, so give me Juventus -115 in France.
