The Merseyside Derby is back, but this time it is in the FA Cup not the Premier League. Liverpool will host Everton in the Round of 64 looking to continue their trek for a treble, or quadruple if you count the FIFA Club World Cup.
Liverpool enter the FA Cup third round looking like the best team in Europe. The Reds have already won the Club World Cup, have the Premier League already wrapped up and are through to the knockout stage of the Champions League. Liverpool are seven time winners of the FA Cup, but has not won the Cup since the 2005-2006 season.
Everton enter this FA Cup matchup with a big uptick in form recently. As of Tuesday, Everton sit six points back of the Europa League spot in the Premier League, were already eliminated from the Carabao Cup and now have to face their rivals to stay in any Cup competitions. The Toffees are five time winners of the FA Cup, but have not won since the 1994-1995 season.
Below is my pick for the FA Cup action between Liverpool and Everton. All odds are from FanDuel Sportsbook.
Liverpool (-190) vs Everton (+340) Draw (+380)
As of Tuesday, Liverpool enter play having won nine of their last 10 games and are still undefeated in the Premier League. Liverpool’s only two losses this season came in the Champions League, to Napoli, and to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup. The Reds started a mostly youth team in that Carabao Cup as they focused on the Club World Cup that week instead. In the Premier League this season, Liverpool are a perfect 10-0-0 and have a goal differential of 18. The Reds have scored more home goals, 27, than 13 teams have scored in all of their games this season.
As of Tuesday, Everton is 26 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, but are just six points back of the Europa League spot. Everton have won three of their last six games and have won two in a row since Carlo Ancelotti was appointed the manager. The Toffees are one of the worst road teams in the Premier League as they have won just eight points from 10 road fixtures. Everton has scored just 11 goals in those 10 road games.
Series History: Liverpool won 5-2 just a few weeks back and leads the all-time series 94-74-66. These two teams have met 24 previous time in the FA Cup and Liverpool leads the all-time series 11-6-7. Overall, Liverpool leads the goal differential by 330-262.
Game Prediction: I think Liverpool are going to try to win the FA Cup this year, so I am backing them to win this one.
