The Gold Cup quarterfinals start Saturday with two interesting games as Group A winners Mexico takes on Group B runners-up Costa Rica and Group B winners Haiti take on Group A runners-up Canada.
Who will be the first two Gold Cup semifinalists? Below are my picks for the two Saturday quarterfinal games.
Canada (-139) vs Haiti (+400): Draw (+260)
Canada took advantage of two weaker opponents, and fell short against the real competition, in their group to advance to the knockout stage. Canada opened play with a 4-0 win over Martinique, then fell to Mexico 3-1, before dropping a touchdown on Cuba and winning 7-0. Canada has now won eight of 10 games and were on a seven game winning streak prior to that Mexico loss.
Haiti was the surprise group stage winner as they opened up play with a 2-1 win over Bermuda, then got the best of Nicaragua and won 2-0 before knocking off Costa Rica 2-1 in the final group stage game. Haiti has won four in a row and seven of their last 10.
I like Canada to get to the Gold Cup semifinals.
These two nations have met 10 times in the past and Canada holds a 7-2-1 lead in the series. Canada has won six straight matchups, in undefeated in the last nine, and has not lost to Haiti since the first ever meeting between these two nations in 1973.
Mexico (-250) vs Costa Rica (+800): Draw (+320)
Mexico was a perfect 3-0 in the group stage, but there was some cause for concern in their final game against Martinique. Mexico started the Gold Cup with a 7-0 win over Cuba, followed that up with a solid 3-1 win over Canada and finished up the group stage with an unconvincing 3-2 win over Martinique. Mexico has now won seven straight games and have scored at least three goals in each of those seven games.
Costa Rica navigated a pretty tricky group with two wins to open the Gold Cup before their defeat against Haiti in the final group stage game. Costa Rica opened the Gold Cup with a 4-0 win over Nicaragua, then beat Bermuda 2-1, before falling to Haiti 2-1 in the final group stage game. Costa Rica have been up and down lately going 5-0-5 in their last 10 games overall.
I like Mexico to the win on Saturday.
These two nations have met 54 times in the past and it is Mexico who holds the 30-17-7 advantage. Mexico has not lost to Costa Rica since 2013, a span of five games, and Mexico won the most recent matchup in October 2018.
