The final of the 2019 Gold Cup will be determined Wednesday between two familiar foes. The USA will take on Jamaica for the right to play for the Gold Cup final.
The USA has now participated in 17 Gold Cups and is through to their 15th semifinal. The USA won the title in the most recent Gold Cup, in 2017, are second behind Mexico with six Gold Cup titles to their name. In America’s previous 14 semifinals they boast an impressive 11-3 record and will look to make it 12-3 on Wednesday.
Jamaica has now participated in 13 Gold Cups and are through to their fifth semifinal appearance. The back-to-back runners-up boast a 2-2 record in their previous four semifinals and will look to take the final step and lift the trophy with two more wins.
The USA and Jamaica have played in the knockout stages of the last two Gold Cups with the USA winning 2-1 in the 2017 final and the Jamaican’s winning 2-1 in the semifinal of the 2015 edition.
Who will earn the right to play in the final of the 2019 Gold Cup? Below is my pick for the USA vs Jamaica
USA (-250) vs Jamaica (+650): Draw (+350)
The USA kept their perfect record, and their clean sheet, in an underwhelming 1-0 win over Curacao in the quarterfinals. The Americans were outplayed in the second half and were lucky that Curacao did not have the finishing touch on Sunday. USA has now outscored opponents 12-0 after a 4-0 win over Guyana, a 6-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago, a 1-0 win over Panama and this 1-0 win over Curacao.
Jamaica looked like they were heading to extra time in their quarterfinal game against Panama, but a 74th minute penalty pushed the Reggae Boys into their third consecutive Gold Cup semifinal. Jamaica have now outscored opponents 5-3 after a 3-2 win over Honduras, a 0-0 draw with El Salvador, a 1-1 draw against Curacao and this 1-0 win over Panama.
I like this game to end in a draw in regulation and for Jamaica to advance after extra time/penalties.
These two nations have met 26 times and the Americans hold a commanding 15-8-3 advantage. Jamaica won their most recent meeting, a Gold Cup warmup in June, 1-0.
