The Bundesliga title race may be finished, but there is still plenty of intrigue as we head into the final month of the league season. European positions and relegation spots are still to be played for, so these final six games should be interesting. Two of these teams fighting for European position will battle it out on Friday May 29, 2020 as SC Freiburg host Bayer Leverkusen. This game will air live on FS2 at 2:30 p.m. EST.
Entering Wednesday’s games, Bayer Leverkusen find themselves in fifth place on the table and currently occupying the first Europa League spot. It is tight, however, as Leverkusen are tied on points, and two goals back, of Borussia Monchengladbach, and are just two points back of third place RB Leipzig, who also have a game in hand to be played on Wednesday. Leverkusen are still fringe second place contenders are they are just four points back of second place Borussia Dortmund.
SC Freiburg see themselves as the first team out of European competition, entering Wednesday’s games, but it is a tight battle. Freiburg trail Wolfsburg by four points for that final Europa League spot and are holding off Schalke by one point, Hoffenheim by two points, and FC Koln and Hertha Berlin by four points.
Below is my pick for the Bundesliga action between Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen. All odds are from FanDuel Sportsbook.
Freiburg (+370) vs Bayer Leverkusen (-140) Draw (+290)
Freiburg found themselves in one of the most exciting games since the Bundesliga returned with a 3-3 road draw at Eintracht Frankfurt. The score was tied 1-1 at the half, but two goals in two minutes saw the road team take a 3-1 lead in the 69th minute. However, two goals in three minutes saw Frankfurt tie the game at three in the 82nd minute. It was an exciting game, but Freiburg will see it as two key points lost. Freiburg are now winless in three straight games and six out of their last seven overall. SC Freiburg are a midtable home club thanks to a 6-2-5 record and 20 points.
Bayer Leverkusen had a big opportunity to get three points at home and sure up their Champions League spot, but a disappointing result now finds them back in the Europa League. Leverkusen hosted Wolfsburg and looked like a relegation candidate side with a 4-1 defeat. Wolfsburg scored a goal right before the half and then added three more in the second half before Leverkusen scored a sympathy goal in the 85th minute. The loss was Leverkusen’s first since February 1st, a span of 13 games. Leverkusen is tied for the second-best road club this season thanks to 28 points and a 9-1-4 record.
Series History: These clubs have met 20 times, since 2009, and it is Bayer Leverkusen with a comfortable 10-7-3 advantage.
Game Prediction: I think Bayer Leverkusen bounces back and comes away with a big road win.
2020 Results: 39-30
