The Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 matches begin today with Ajax traveling to Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund hosting Tottenham. One home team is in pretty good shape heading into these second legs, while another is going to need a classic performance, or collapse, to advance.
Real Madrid vs Ajax
First Leg Result: Ajax 1 – 2 Real Madrid
Karim Benzema opened the scoring for Madrid, but Ajax quickly equalized to make it 1-1 in the 75th minute. A late Marco Asensio goal gave Real Madrid the win and two crucial road goals.
Preview: Real Madrid is coming off back-to-back El Clasico home losses and have lost three homes games in a row across all competitions. Ajax has won two straight road games, but have only three wins out of their last five matches across all competitions. Ajax outplayed Real Madrid in Amsterdam and deserved at least a draw if not the win. Grabbing an early away goal is going to be big for Ajax here as Madrid may collapse if they go down early.
Game Odds: Real Madrid -159, Ajax +400, Draw +320. O/U 3.5 goals (+107)
Ajax has gone over 3.5 goals three out of their last five matches while Real Madrid has gone under 3.5 goals in five straight matches. At home Real Madrid has gone under 3.5 goals in four of their last five and Ajax has gone over 3.5 in four of their last five road games.
Prediction: Real Madrid 2 – 1 Ajax.
If Ajax goes up early I think they could pull the upset, but I think Real Madrid will show they aren’t fazed and grab a similar score line to Leg 1 and advance to the quarters. Take Real Madrid and the under in this one.
Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham
First Leg Result: Tottenham 3 – 0 Dortmund
Three second half goals by Spurs put the Bundesliga leaders in a big deficit heading into their home fixture. Son, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente have Tottenham feeling good heading into Leg 2.
Preview: Both teams are in pretty poor form now as Dortmund has one win, two draws and two losses over their last five games, while Tottenham has two wins, one draw and two losses over the same span. In their last five home games Dortmund has three wins, one draw and one loss. Prior to this drop in form Dortmund had been unbeatable at home for months. Tottenham is in terrible road form as they have lost four in a row. Prior to this four game road losing streak Tottenham was on a seven game unbeaten streak away from Wembley. The 3-0 score line was a bit unfair to Dortmund as they did not get outplayed by three goals. They were all over Tottenham in the opening 30 minutes, but could not get the ball in the back of the net. Not getting an away goal is a real blow to Dortmund, but they are capable of getting a big result, against any team in the world, at home.
Game Odds: Borussia Dortmund -101, Tottenham +265, Draw +250 O/U 3 goals (-106)
Dortmund has gone over three goals two out of their last five games, but have gone over in four out of their last five home matches. Tottenham, on the other hand, have gone over three goals just once in their five matches overall and away matches.
Prediction: Dortmund 3 – 2 Tottenham
The over here is a very nice bet, especially at the -106 odds, as Dortmund is going to have to heavily attack. With that attack means they will be left open in the back and Tottenham will have some great chances on the counter. I think Dortmund grabs an early 2-0 lead, and win the game, but Dortmund’s awful defense is going to prevent them from advancing here.
