Champions League Best Bets – March 13th

The Champions League Round of 16 concludes Wednesday with two ties that are very much in the balance. Liverpool travels to Munich to take on Bayern and Barcelona welcome Lyon to Camp Nou. Both first legs finished 0-0, so everything is in play for this one.

Bayern Munich vs Liverpool

Last Time Out: Liverpool 0 – 0 Bayern Munich

It was a pretty dull affair when these two met at Anfield three weeks back. Liverpool had a few chances but lacked a finishing ability in the first half. Sadio Mane had the biggest chance when he had a close range header stopped by Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer. Bayern lacked an attacking foot all night and did not register a shot on target.

Preview: Bayern has really turned their season around and their form in the last 10 games proves that. The German giants have gone 8-1-1 which has seen them become level, on points, in the Bundesliga title race. At home Bayern is in even better form having not lost since October 6th. Over that time frame they are 9-0-2 at Allianz Arena. Liverpool have seen their Premier League lead disappear over the last few weeks as they struggle to find the back of the net. In their last ten games they have five wins and five draws, but in those five draws they have scored either zero or one goals. Liverpool haven’t registered a goal in their last two road matches and haven’t won on the road since January 12th.

Game Odds: Bayern +109, Liverpool +225, Draw +240, O/U 2.5, 3 (-104)

Prediction: Bayern 1 – 1 Liverpool

I expect this to be similar to last game, but both teams get on the board. I think Liverpool advance on away goals, but take a draw at +240 in this one.

Barcelona vs Lyon

Last Time Out: Lyon 0 – 0 Barcelona

Barcelona were unlucky to not get an away goal, in the first leg, as they had 59% possession and fired 24 shot attempts. They had more major chances than Lyon, who had just five shot attempts, but just could not get the ball in the back of the net.

Preview: Not counting club friendlies, Barcelona is undefeated overall since January 23rd, expanding 11 games across all competitions. At home that number is even more impressive as they have not lost at Camp Nou in their last 12 home fixtures. These past few games Barcelona has been getting it done without Messi being in top form which is an encouraging site as we get into the later stages of the Champions League. Lyon has gone 2-1-2 in their last five matches. Their away form is a little worse as they are 2-2-1.

Game Odds: Barcelona -435, Lyon +935, Draw +520, O/U 3, 3.5 (-112)

Prediction: Barcelona 3 – 0 Lyon

Barcelona should easily get this done. I would actually take the spread on this one, so go Barcelona -1.5 (-118).
