We’ll have NASCAR and we’ll have golf. We won’t have the Indy 500, which has been moved to August 23. We won’t have baseball, America’s pastime, although one pastime of America has been approved for wagering. Professional gluttony.

The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest has gotten approval from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement to be listed at sportsbooks across the Garden State. Normally held at Coney Island, the contest will be held at a private location because of social distancing requirements.

There are only two rules that must be followed by sportsbooks that post odds on the Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The first is that bets shall only be offered before the event, so you cannot live bet the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The second is that bets shall only be offered on the event itself or whether a record will be broken. Prop bets on things like the weather or what the contestants are wearing will not be allowed.

Joey Chestnut is going for his 13th win in this competitive eating contest. ESPN2 will have the broadcast at noon on Saturday July 4. Chestnut faces five other competitors and will be looking to break his record of 74 hot dogs plus buns.

Chestnut’s biggest competition, Matt Stonie, who beat him back in 2015, will not be on hand for the event. Darron Breeden was second to Chestnut last year, but finished 21 pieces of processed meat and bread behind him. Geoffery Esper was third last year. Chestnut’s over/under total will be around 70. Breeden’s will be set around 50.

New Jersey is not the only state offering betting on the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Colorado and New Hampshire, which only offers DraftKings as a sports betting operator, have also green-lighted wagers on the contest.

One of the most interesting betting odds for this year’s event will be women’s Mustard Belt winner Miki Sudo against her boyfriend Nick Wehry in a head-to-head matchup. Sudo is a big favorite to get household bragging rights.
