Baghdasaryan vs Culibao Fight Preview
Josh Culibao started his UFC tenure with some tumult, but has gotten on track since. He was finished easily in his tough debut against Jalin Turner, and then fought to a draw with Charles Jourdain. He followed that up with an impressive win against Shayilan Nuerdanbieke, and another against Seungwoo Choi. Culibao has shown that he is more than we initially thought early in his UFC tenure. His striking is not exactly dynamic, but he has enough pop to earn respect. We have not seen a world of wrestling and grappling from Culibao in the UFC, but he may have no choice to opt for that approach in this matchup. He is outmatched in the standup.
Melsik Baghdasaryan is a striker with a diversity of attacks that is yet to taste defeat in the UFC. He is 3-0 with three fights under the UFC banner, and he is entering another good spot. Baghdasaryan is a fighter that comes out of the gate quickly, and pushes hard to find an early finish. This approach can obviously reward him and has in the past, but it can take a toll on the gas tank and make him slow a bit later. Not slow to the point of exhaustion, but to not keep the same pace. Baghdasaryan is going to give Culibao little choice but to engage in an exciting fire fight. Baghdasaryan is the better and more powerful striker in all aspects.
Culibao is a fighter with heart that will want to stand and bang with his opponent in the stand up. It will likely take little time at all for him to realize he is outmatched, should he not be finished quickly. This is where we could see him try to slow the fight and perhaps attempt some takedowns. He is not likely to have a world of success in that realm, as it will be to try to avoid further striking. For Baghdasaryan, if the early finish does not come, he will still set a pace and be the obviously better striker for at least the first two rounds. Even if he slows a bit and drops the third round, we should have no issues cashing our pickem ticket.
