The Houston Astros (19-14) routed the Los Angeles Angels (15-18) in game one of this two-game series down in Mexico by a score of 14-2. Justin Verlander (4-1 2.45 ERA) will be looking for the same result today against Matt Harvey (1-2 6.54 ERA).

After a couple of rough starts in two of his first three starts this season, Verlander has pitched some of his best baseball in years over his last four starts. Verlander has only allowed one earned run in each of his last four outings and hasn’t allowed more than four hits in any of those games. However, his only loss of the season came in his last start, a 1-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins which saw Verlander only allow two hits across six innings. A home run to Ehire Adrianza (his only one this season), who is currently batting .158, was what cost Verlander the game.

Harvey has been two different pitchers so far this season. He has three starts where he has allowed two earned runs or fewer, and three where he has allowed four or more. With Harvey, it is a matter of which pitcher you are going to see on any given day. Regardless of which one shows up today, walks have been a bit of an issue for him so far this season (13 in just 31 ⅔ innings).

Verlander has been one of the best pitchers in baseball so far this season and has a WHIP of 0.86 (T2nd in the MLB) to go along with his 53 strikeouts in 44 innings. Verlander has gone at least six innings in every start this year but one, and Harvey has only managed to pitch more than six innings once this season. Verlander should be able to carve up an Angels lineup that ranks 22nd in hits per game. Look for Harvey to be bounced from this game before the end of the 6th inning, while Verlander flirts with the possibility of pitching into the eighth. After letting Verlander down in his last start, the Astros will be looking to pile on the run support in this one.
