Alexa Grasso
Alexa Grasso is the highest-profile Mexican fighter taking part in the UFC 306 card, as she is defending her women’s flyweight championship against Valentina Shevchenko. Grasso is unbeaten in the previous two fights she’s had with Shevchenko, beating her to take the belt the first time, then keeping her title in a draw in their last matchup. Here, Grasso will look for a huge win in a big weekend for combat sports in her country.
In this fight, the trajectory of both fighters seems to favor Grasso. She is fighting at a very high level and appears to be in her prime at age 31, while Shevchenko’s best years look to be behind her at age 36. But Grasso can’t afford to take it easy in this fight, as Shevchenko is still more than explosive enough to get the win in this third matchup between the two.
Valentina Shevchenko
Going into this Alexa Grasso vs Valentina Shevchenko bout, Shevchenko has not won a fight since 2022 when she defended this title against Taila Santos. Since then, Shevchenko lost her title to Grasso and failed to win it back when the draw took place in September of 2023. Here, Shevchenko will look to finally get her win back over Grasso to win her title back.
This is likely Shevchenko’s last chance to win this title for a while if she loses this bout. To avoid losing, she needs to keep herself at range with her jab. Doing so will neutralize the boxing ability of Grasso. But the question will be whether or not Shevchenko is willing to fight a “boring” fight to do what she needs to do to win here.
