Key Storylines
Colorado is in the middle of a disappointing season and is making yet another quarterback change. After a 3-6 start, head coach Deion Sanders has announced true freshman Julian Lewis will get the start at quarterback for the first time. His ascension comes after two straight losses in which the Buffaloes surrendered 50+ points. Sanders is hoping that Lewis can do a better job of keeping possessions going than Kaidon Salter did in recent weeks to make life easier on the Colorado defense.
West Virginia arrives with a bit of momentum after a 45-35 road win over the Houston Cougars. Freshman QB Scotty Fox Jr. had 157 passing yards and 65 rushing yards in that win. Running backs Diore Hubbard and Cyncir Bowers combined for nearly 175 rushing yards. The Mountaineers forced four turnovers in that contest and West Virginia’s defense will be aggressive here as well against an inexperienced quarterback.
Quarterback Play
Colorado’s decision to go with Lewis is a gamble. But Colorado doesn’t have much to lose at this point given that they are already well out of contention in the Big 12. The offensive line for the Buffaloes has struggled to protect the passer and control the run game. That means Lewis will likely face heavy pressure early and his ability to make quick decisions will be tested.
West Virginia’s Fox Jr. led the Mountaineers to a 45-point eruption last week on the road against Houston. Hubbard and Bowers will try to take some of the pressure off of Fox by eating up yardage on the ground. As long as West Virginia doesn’t make too many mistakes on offense, they should be able to move the ball against the struggling Buffs.

Final Thoughts
West Virginia should be able to win and cover the spread at home in this matchup. The Mountaineers haven’t been all that good in Big 12 play this year. But they look like the Pat White era Mountaineers compared to the way the Buffaloes have played this season. I’m going to lay the points with WVU on Saturday afternoon.
