Yes, sports betting is legal in New York for both in-person and online wagering. Online sports betting has officially launched in New York as of January 8, 2022. Before that day, bettors had to go to a select number of land-based sportsbooks throughout upstate New York. That approach really boxed New York City out of the equation, as bettors weren’t able to get their wagers in from the most densely populated portion of the state.

In total, nine sportsbooks will be allowed to operate in New York at this point in time. That means that bettors can use any or all of those books to compare betting odds and get the best prices they can on every single wager. At the start, though, only four sportsbook operators are being permitted to launch on the initial date of January 8.
Which Sportsbooks Are Available?

At the start of New York’s legal online sports gambling, four sportsbooks are allowed to operate: DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars and BetRivers are those four sportsbooks. All four of these books carry a strong reputation, which will set New York sports bettors off on a strong start with their online wagering. And things are only going to get better in New York in the future as more sportsbooks will launch in the future.
The other five sportsbooks that will launch in New York in the future are PointsBet, BetMGM, Bally Bet, Resorts World and WynnBet. This means that an elite roster of sports betting sites is set to come in the state in the near future, giving bettors plenty of options to choose from when doing their wagering.
