Kipyegon is the odds-on favorite to win the gold medal in the Olympic women’s 5000m final in track and field. This is understandable given that she has won back-to-back golds in the Olympics in the 1500 and has won the World Championships in this distance in 2023 as well. She is the only athlete inside of +500 to win this race, though three of her competitors are inside of +1000 to win the gold.
Olympic Women’s 5000m Major Storylines
The change in distance from 1500 to 5000m for Kipyegon is a massive storyline going into this event. But she has proven she can handle this race and perform at an elite level in it, as evidenced by her briefly holding the world record in this distance in 2023. The question will be whether she can handle the elite field in this race as well as she has proven she can handle this distance on an individual level.
Sifan Hassan is the other huge storyline coming into this 5000m final. She ran the 1500, 5000 and 10000m finals in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, medaling in all three. She will look for similar results in the Paris Olympics, including in this, the first of her medal events of these games.

Along with Kipyegon and Hassan, there are a couple of other strong contenders for the medal stand in the Olympic women’s 5000m final. Beatrice Chebet of Kenya has finished on the podium in the 5000m in the 2022 and 2023 World Championships.
