Odds from FanDuel Sportsbook
Gretchen Walsh of the United States is the favorite to win the Olympic women’s 100m butterfly event on Sunday. She is the current world record holder in this race, having set that mark in June of 2024 at the US Olympic Trials. But she is joined by another American in Torri Huske who is just behind Walsh on the board, with Huske coming very close to matching Walsh’s time in the Olympic Trials.
Olympic Women’s 100m Butterfly Major Storylines
With two Americans being so close to one another and with the world record hanging in the balance, a potential duel between Walsh and Huske of the United States is clearly the top storyline of this event. We could see those two take gold and silver while battling for a world record in a race that could come down to hundredths of a second. That is as compelling a situation as you could ask for in a race like this, especially with a talented field around the Americans.
Then there is the story of Zhang Yufei, who is an interesting figure at these games both for reasons in and out of the pool. She won two gold and two silver medals in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, including silver in the 100m butterfly and gold in the 200m butterfly. But she has also had to contend with doping allegations, which could taint her games regardless of how she actually performs in this race.
Olympic Women’s 100m Butterfly Medal Contenders
The top-three medal contenders in this event are Walsh, Huske, and Zhang, who could very well finish in that order when all is said and done. No other swimmer in this event enters with odds better than +2000, but there are still a few medal contenders that could emerge if Zhang or any of the top-three have a bad day in the pool. Germany’s Angelina Kohler and Australia’s Emma McKeon would have to be among those medal contenders should we see any slippage among the favorites.
Women’s 100m Butterfly Betting Prediction: Torri Huske (+270)
While Gretchen Walsh is the world record holder going into the Olympic women’s 100m butterfly, we will take her fellow American Torri Huske to grab the gold in this event. Huske was within a half-second of Walsh during the Olympic Trials where Walsh set the world record. Both are swimming incredibly well at the right time and we will take Huske at a much better price to come out on top in a race that could be decided by the slimmest of margins.
