Odds from Sportzino
The United States is a heavy favorite to win the Olympic men’s 4x400m relay event. And that makes sense, given that they have won this race all but four times since 1956. Those three times were the result of a withdrawal from the race in 1972, a boycott of the 1980 Olympics, a disqualification from the event in 2000, and a loss to Bahamas in 2012. Other than that, the US has dominated this race since the mid-1950s and are expected to keep that trend going here.
Olympic Men’s 4x400m Relay Major Storylines
The United States is far and away the biggest storyline going into this race from Paris. Team USA had three individuals qualify for the final of the individual version of this event, including gold medalist Quincy Hall, who fought back late to win the race. Hall, along with fellow finalists Christopher Bailey and Michael Norman, could all factor into the final of this event and should give the USA a huge advantage here.
Along with the presence of the United States, the lack of Jamaica in this event is a major story. The Jamaicans didn’t have an individual finalist in the men’s 400m race and their lack of any sort of great 400m runner right now has cost them the ability to compete for a medal in this event. As a result, the podium could go in so many different directions that you don’t see in some of the shorter distance events in Olympic sprinting.
Olympic Men’s 4x400m Relay Medal Contenders
The United States will end up on the podium in this event unless they botch a baton exchange at some point in this race. Along with the US, Botswana is expected to end up on the podium along with Great Britain. Great Britain could be especially interesting going into this final, as they are led by Matthew Hudson-Smith, who had the lead in the individual 400m final before Hall of the United States swooped in to steal the gold.
Men’s 4x400m Relay Betting Prediction: USA (-650)
It is always possible that an exchange issue can derail a team in any track and field relay. But the United States should have enough margin for error in this race that they will be able to take their time and make the precise exchanges needed to win this event. We will take the United States to win the gold here for the third time in a row, as their depth in this distance is too much for the rest of the field to overcome.
