Key Storylines
Goaltending
Lukas Dostal is set to be the starting goaltender for the Anaheim Ducks early in the season. Dostal signed a five-year contract extension worth $32.5 million over the summer. He will try to prove that he is worth that kind of money starting with this game. Joey Daccord is likely to be the starter in Seattle this year after playing in 57 games with a 2.75 GAA a season ago.
Key Injuries
Seattle will need to deal with the absence of defenseman Ryker Evans and right winger Kaapo Kakko. Anaheim must manage without veteran forward Ryan Strome, out with an upper-body injury to start the season. Those key injuries could make it tougher for either team to have success early in the year.
Key skaters
- Jackson LaCombe inked a historic eight-year, $72 million contract extension with Anaheim after a breakout season.
- Seattle’s forward group is getting healthier. Players like Jared McCann and Chandler Stephenson are returning from injury and they will hope that offsets the absence of Kakko. But the loss of Evans is a drag on Seattle’s defensive depth.

Final Thoughts
I think that both of these teams have the potential to improve compared to what we saw from them last season. But only one team can win their season opener against one another. I think that team will be the Seattle Kraken. Seattle is at home and should take advantage of the fact that the Ducks were 14-19-8 on the road last year. Look for the Kraken to open their season with a win on home ice that they hope will kickstart a strong year out West.
