Key Storylines
- Quarterback Play: Baker Mayfield has been exceptional for the Buccaneers, completing 29 of 33 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-35 win over the Seahawks in Week 5. His performance has been a key factor in Tampa Bay’s success this season, as he enters this week with 10 touchdowns and one interception. Mac Jones has performed admirably in the place of the injured Brock Purdy for San Francisco. But Jones was hurt against the LA Rams last week and his recovery will be something to monitor this week.
- Injuries: The Buccaneers could be without running back Bucky Irving due to a sprained foot and shoulder subluxation. This injury could impact their rushing game, but Rachaad White is expected to step up in his absence if he’s out again. Mike Evans is also out for the Bucs on offense. Purdy is questionable again due to his toe injury.
- 49ers’ Offense: The 49ers have been relying heavily on their passing game, with backup quarterback Mac Jones leading the offense. But Christian McCaffrey is barely averaging three yards per carry and has to perform better for his team to have more sustained success.
- Playoff Implications: These teams enter Week 6 in a four-way tie for the best record in the NFC. A win for either team would keep them in at least a tie for first place in the conference standings for another week, as the race for home-field advantage in the NFC progresses.

Final Thoughts
Both of these teams are 4-1, but I’m not entirely sold on the Niners just yet. They have had success against a pretty soft schedule so far, while the Bucs have gone toe-to-toe with some better competition. I expect that to pay off for the Bucs in this contest and for Tampa to cover the spread as a favorite on their home turf.
