How To Bet On The 2022 World Series
No matter how you want to attack the 2022 World Series from a betting perspective, you have multiple options. You can bet game by game, using the particular days odds. You can always bet the series outcome at any point, which will have different odds than the specific games themselves.
Game Bets
When betting on a specific game, sportsbooks will offer odds based on that specific game. These odds will change game by game based on the starting pitchers for each team.
We will use Game 1 as an example. The Astros are expected to start Justin Verlander and the Phillies are expected to start Aaron Nola. Given this pitching matchup, the oddsmakers have set the Astros as a -170 favorite. The Phillies are +145 as an underdog. These figures are based on $100 bets. A $100 dollar wager on the Phillies would return $145. Conversely, a wager on the Astros would require risking $170 to win $100. Check out our moneyline betting page for more details.
A less common avenue of betting game by game is on the run line. This is a way to change the odds in your favor betting on a favorite or to improve chances of winning with an underdog. Run lines are almost always -1.5 runs for the favorite. This of course means the favorite would have to win by more than one run to be considered a winner.
Using our Game 1 example, the -1.5 run line on Houston returns +135 while +1.5 runs on Philadelphia costs -155. Notice the odds shift bringing the run line into play.
Series Bets
Series bets are self-explanatory. They are a wager on which team wins the series. These odds will be available leading into the series and will change based on the outcome of each game.
The Astros are -185 favorite to win the 2022 World Series. The comeback odds on the Phillies are +160.
Totals
Run totals are an over/under bet based on total runs scored in the game by both teams.
The run total for Game 1 of the 2022 World Series is set particularly low, at just 6.5 runs. A wager on the the over would need the two teams to score a combined seven runs or more to be considered a winner. A wager on the under would require six runs or fewer to be considered a winner.
Prop Betting
Prop Betting is another way of betting on the World Series. There are ways to bet on the outcome, such as the exact final of the series as a way to get better odds. Most prop betting is on players however.
Player props give bettors a way to bet on players they believe will have the largest impact over the course of the series. These options include but are not limited to the player to have the most hits in the series, the player to have the most RBI in the series, the player to have the most home runs in the series and how many total players hit a home run in the series.
Player props are also available in each specific game. These odds are released in the day leading up to the game.
If you are confident enough in your prop betting picks and want to parlay these locks, you can also take advantage of the Same Game Parlay feature that most online sportsbooks offer.
World Series Betting Strategy
When looking at how the Game 1 pitchers, Justin Verlander is difficult to argue against. In his last eight starts dating back to mid August, he has been dominant. He allowed zero or one earned run in six of those eight games. He also had an outing allowing two earned runs over six innings. That included his lone start this season against the Phillies where he threw five hitless innings just three weeks ago. Verlander ended the season with a league best 1.75 ERA, and only contributed to that in his lone outing against the Phillies. It would be at least something of a surprise to the Philly bats ready for Verlander, and the Astros are a solid bet in Game 1.
I believe it is better to bet the Astros earlier on in this series, as the odds will be more favorable. Both in single game spots and for the series. The edge in starting pitching will increasingly tilt towards Houston as the series progresses. Only Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola will be considered to be non mismatches in terms of starting pitching. Zack Wheeler has been more reliable this postseason than Aaron Nola. Nola was rocked for six runs in his most recent start against San Diego. With Nola the likely pitcher on the hill to throw the first pitch of this series, taking the Astros in Game 1 is the most prudent path. The Astros could be -300 or more in Games 3 and/or 4 when the pitching matchups are even more in their favor. This also lends more credence to attacking the Astros in the series earlier than later. The odds required to be laid on the Astros will increase significantly as the series progresses.
Astros Path To The World Series
The Astros have been utterly perfect en route the 2022 World Series. They swept the Seattle Mariners in the first round, and then had to wait a bit for the Yankees vs Guardians series to end. They went on to sweep the Yankees and are yet to taste defeat in this postseason. The Astros are a perfect 7-0 this postseason.
Phillies Path To World Series
The Phillies path to the World Series was an easy one in historical context. They dropped one game in two of their three series but never trailed a series at any point. The Phillies swept the Cardinals in the short Wild Card Series. They went on to eliminate the Braves 3-1 in the Divisional Round, and finally the Padres 4-1 in the National League Championship Series. This easy path would seem dominant in previous years, just not in comparison to what the Astros have accomplished.
2022 World Series Best Bets
It is difficult to want to place bets against the Astros given the dominance they have displayed thus far this postseason. The -170 series price tag is not an egregious one by any means. In fact, it may sit on the value side of the spectrum. The Astros recent World Series experience should be addressed as well. This is a team familiar with the biggest stage. They have participated in three of the last five World Series, winning one. The Phillies do not have the same experience, as this is their first berth since 2009. If placing a wager on the series before it begins, the Astros are the side to take.
There is a strong player prop to take a look at for the series. That is on which player earns series MVP honors. Yordan Alvarez was the hero for the Astros in the series against the Mariners. He had a pair of home runs that decided two of the three wins in that series. He was quieter against the Yankees, but it should be noted the lone interleague series of the year between the Astros and Phillies was just in early October. Alvarez went 6 for 11 in that three game series, including three doubles. He is the co-favorite to win series MVP at +650 and is certainly the best bet on the board.
