A key American League West battle begins, and ends, on Monday, September 14, 2020, when the Oakland Athletics (29-17) visit the Seattle Mariners (21-25) for a quick one-day double header. The Oakland Athletics lead the AL West by 6.5 games over the Houston Astros, while the Mariners are in third place and just two games back of those Astros. If the playoffs started today the Athletics would be the three seed in the AL, and would face the six seed Houston Astros, and Seattle would be the first team left out. This game will air live on FS1 at 8:10 p.m. EST.
Oakland visited the Texas Rangers over the weekend and split a four-game series with the last place team in the AL West. The Athletics won game one 10-6 and then the two teams split a double header on Saturday. Texas was able to get the series split with a 6-3 win on Sunday.
Seattle visited the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are currently the second worst team in the majors and took two of three. Arizona won the first game 4-3, but Seattle followed that up with back-to-back 7-3 wins on Saturday and Sunday.
Below is my pick for the Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners. All odds are from BetMGM Sportsbook.
Oakland Athletics (-157) at Seattle Mariners (+145)
Pitching Matchup: Mike Minor (0-5, 6.35 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) vs TBD
Mike Minor is set to make his second start with Oakland, ninth overall this year, and will look to try and find some form this year. With the Rangers, Minor gave up 23 runs (22 earned) and 35 hits in 35.1 innings pitched. In Minor’s first Athletics appearance he came in relief and allowed two hits and two earned runs in just one inning pitched. Last time out, Minor started his first game for Oakland and gave up four runs and three hits in just 3.1 innings of work.
The Mariners will announce their starting pitcher as game two of the doubleheader gets closer.
Left fielder Robbie Grossman is not have a great season, but he does lead the Oakland Athletics with a .252 batting average and an .863 OPS. Third baseman Matt Chapman, who will miss the rest of the season after a hip injury, leads the team with a .535 slugging. Designated hitter Mark Canha leads the Athletics with a .388 on base percentage and first baseman Matt Olson leads with 13 home runs and 38 RBI’s. No one has eye popping stats for Oakland, but they are very balanced and getting the job done.
It has been the Kyle Lewis show in Seattle this season as the rookie center fielder leads the team with a .292 batting average, .383 on base percentage, .472 slugging, .855 OPS and nine home runs. Third baseman Kyle Seager has a team high 33 RBI’s.
MLB Predictions: Regardless of who starts for Seattle I am backing the Oakland Athletics in game two.
