In today’s Angels vs Orioles matchup, Patrick Sandoval takes the mound for the Angels, while Corbin Burnes takes the mound for Baltimore. Sandoval went 7-13 with a 4.11 ERA for the Angels last season, in what was a disappointing year for Los Angeles. Things could get even worse for Sandoval and the Angels this season, as they begin life without Shohei Ohtani, who is now a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
On the other side, Corbin Burnes went 10-8 with an ERA of 3.39. How Burnes adjusts from life in the National League to life in the American League will be a huge subplot for the Orioles all season long. If Burnes can pitch effectively in a much tougher division than he was in during his time in the NL Central, the Orioles could become a much more serious postseason contender than they were a year ago.
As for this Angels vs Orioles game, the Orioles should win rather handily. Not only is Burnes a much better pitcher than Sandoval, but the Orioles lineup is also vastly superior to that of the Angels. Even with Mike Trout back on the field for the Angels this season, the loss of Ohtani combined with the existing malaise around the Angels franchise should give the Orioles a decided edge here.
Instead of taking the Orioles to win this game on the moneyline, we will take the O’s to win on the runline. Expect Burnes to get off to a good start with his new team and for the offense of the Orioles to put up some big numbers to kick off their year, as Baltimore will make a statement that last year’s AL East title was no fluke.
