The favorite to win the Olympic men’s golf tournament is Scottie Scheffler of the United States. Scheffler has dominated the PGA Tour this year, winning six tournaments in 2024, including The Masters. His putting is not the best in this field, or even close to it, but everything about his game could make him the one who comes out on top of this field and with the gold medal around his neck.
Olympic Men’s Golf Major Storylines
Scheffler is a storyline no matter where he goes in men’s golf right now. But there are plenty of other huge stories to keep an eye on in the Olympic men’s golf competition. One such storyline is the play of American Xander Schauffele, who is looking to win gold in this event for the second straight Olympics. Schauffele has won two majors already this year and adding a gold medal on top of that would make his 2024 one of the great years in the recent history of the sport.
Another men’s golf storyline to keep an eye on will be the play of European golfers at this event. If you look at the odds list for this tournament, you will see a ton of Europeans near the top along with Scheffler and Schauffele. With this tournament taking place in France, there is some familiarity with this course as a part of the European Tour. Europe also won a Ryder Cup at this course in the recent past, so it will be interesting to see how the Europeans in this field play compared to the Americans.
Then there is the scoring storyline, as we could be in for some low numbers at this event. Winners of the Open de France at this venue have carded scores of -10 or better in six of the last seven instances of that tournament dating back to 2015. With the best golfers in the world participating in this tournament, and not just European Tour participants, we could be in for some great numbers this time around.
Olympic Men’s Golf Medal Contenders
Along with Scheffler and Schauffele, there are a ton of competitors who could come away with gold, silver, or bronze in the Olympic men’s golf tournament. Europeans like Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm have already had success in this course in their careers. Meanwhile, names like Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland are trendy when it comes to gold medal betting, as they could be in contention throughout the tournament.
Of course, we could see any number of golfers come away with a medal here, something we saw in the Tokyo Olympics. Pan Cheng-tsung took the bronze medal in Tokyo, winning a seven-man playoff for that medal, one which included elite golfers like McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, and Hideki Matsuyama.
Men’s Golf Betting Prediction: Jon Rahm (+1400)
While the two favorites to win this tournament are Americans, we are going to go with a European to win this tournament in Spain’s Jon Rahm. Rahm has had success at this course before and it is almost easy to forget how good Rahm is now that he is off in LIV Golf most of the time. Look for the Spaniard to outperform Scheffler, Schauffele, and the rest of the competition to get his hands on Olympic gold at Le Golf National.
