The PGA Tour schedule delivers one of its most anticipated stops each March with The PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The 2026 edition runs from March 12 through March 15 and again features one of the strongest fields in golf. Often described as the unofficial fifth major, the tournament attracts nearly every top player on the planet and offers a course that demands precision from tee to green. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler enters as the clear favorite, but a deep group of contenders, including Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, and Ludvig Aberg, gives bettors plenty of options when evaluating outright wagers.

The PLAYERS Championship consistently produces one of the most competitive leaderboards on the PGA Tour. The field typically includes over 120 players, with most of the top-ranked golfers in the world competing for the iconic gold trophy. Unlike many tournaments where power dominates, TPC Sawgrass rewards precision, strategic play, and disciplined shot selection.
Scottie Scheffler headlines the betting board again in this tournament. The world No. 1 already owns two victories at Sawgrass after winning the tournament in 2023 and 2024. He enters this week around +425 to win, giving him roughly a 20% implied chance to win. Scheffler has been extremely consistent over the past two seasons and already has a victory earlier this year at The American Express. However, he has also posted several rounds above 70 recently and finished outside the top 20 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Rory McIlroy sits second on the odds board at +1500 as the defending champion. McIlroy captured the title in 2025 and has historically played well on Pete Dye layouts. His preparation has been slightly uncertain this week due to a lingering back issue that forced him to withdraw from a recent tournament. If fully healthy, he remains one of the most dangerous players in the field.
Behind the two headliners sits a talented tier of contenders. Collin Morikawa continues to rank among the best iron players in the game and has gained strokes across multiple statistical categories during recent tournaments. Ludvig Aberg has shown strong form early in the season, while Xander Schauffele and Tommy Fleetwood bring consistent all-around games that often translate well to demanding courses like Sawgrass.
The Pete Dye-designed Stadium Course is widely considered one of the most strategically demanding layouts in professional golf. Accuracy off the tee is essential because water hazards and thick rough punish missed fairways. Players also face numerous approach shots from 125 to 200 yards, making elite iron play a major advantage.
While Scheffler deserves his position as the favorite, the betting value lies slightly further down the board. TPC Sawgrass historically rewards elite ball strikers who can control approach shots and avoid mistakes around the greens. That profile fits Tommy Fleetwood perfectly.
So far this season, Fleetwood is third in this field in the shots gained metric, trailing only Scheffler and McIlroy. And while those two are better than Fleetwood in a vacuum, they are also a drastically worse prices than Fleetwood, making the Englishman a decent value to come away with the title despite not being in that top-two tier of golfer.
Expect several contenders to remain in the mix late on Sunday afternoon. Scheffler could easily contend again, given his history at the venue, while players such as Aberg, Morikawa, and Cameron Young possess the scoring ability to surge up the leaderboard. Still, Fleetwood's current statistical profile and consistency make him a compelling outright wagering option as far as I'm concerned.
